Wenger Blackout
on: January 18, 2012, 08:06:37 AM
All black Wenger!

The only things not blacked out are the edge and the shield- even the toothpick and tweezers are black!

There was also a blacked out Ranger but it wasn't available while we were there.  We'll be trying to get some pictures of it soon.

Is that the same as the previous blackout one that was more exclusive?  Looks like the blade coating might have changed, but it could just be the image/light.  I presume if it's at SHOT it is coming to North America?

The T&T in black are nice touches.

I hope the black doesn't rub off the toothpick, so you are left with blackened teeth after use! LOL

I dont understand the purpose of blacking out everything but the shield.    At least make a muted version for this type of tool.   Were going to black out the toothpick, but not our logo.

:tu: Will the black come off in your teeth if you use the toothpick for its real purpose?

Nice!  Glad to see they are still PVD coated, although it means the price might be a bit steep.

I managed to get some shots of the 120mm version today.

It's very !

I do like the look of these, I'm just slightly puzzled as to the limited tool choices for a "stealthy" tool. Just a knife and bottle openers - it's almost as though it was designed for covert alcohol consumption  ninja bartenders maybe?

I look at the stuff you have up for Wegner and it makes me feel like Vic has them as the "Young Edgy Trendy side of the House" of the two companys...Please note All I am not saying this is a bad thing or a slam on the Decisions of Victorinox...Personally I think it's pretty smart!

  Spoken like a true-armchair-comando

alhough a black on black muted shield would be even more tactiCOOL its really isn't needed...

The toothpick is blackened out for the aesthetics of symmetry.
Since the shield isn't going to reflect a person position like the tweezers it can stay red and if you can spot truly always spot a dime sized red cross in a sweeping glance of 20m thats impressive

officers have muted insigna so snipers can't differentiate between them and line troops (providing they are kitted out the same) by that stage its not about hiding that you're there, just what you are

The Blackout is really cool!

I've taken a liking to black oxide lately because stainless tools or knives won't take on a patina. At all. Maybe a stain here or there over the years, but I really appreciate those well-worn carbon steel kitchen knives and slipjoints.

With an oxide coated tool, you kinda get the same (wear in the coating) - but in reverse! Clear evidence that the tool or knife has been around the block. :)

Except these ones are not Black Oxide coated, which is what makes them even more exciting.

I googled that as I had no idea what it was, and it appears it's a method of coating ... but what is it coated with?

They can use a number of different metal compounds with the process.  If the coating is for something other than aesthetics then the choice can be quit important.  I'm not sure of the compound(s) used to just give a nice black look, but I suspect graphite is one of the elements.
