Mora / Light My Fire Swedish FireKnife

I just saw a video on youtube of the new collaboration product between Mora and Light My Fire, a Mora knife with a fero rod integrated into the handle. I'm not shure about the retention though. The other thing that got my attention is the grind at the tip of the blade, I like it. :tu:

Interesting idea.  I can see a few folks wanting to try this out, if the price is OK anyway. :)

Well... I finally gave in and bought one - and I like it a lot :)
The firesteel sits tight in the handle, yet it's easy to take out (and lights a fire just as good as the larger firesteels); the blade is a bit small but very sharp, the orange colour makes it easy to find after you've put it aside...
It'll get carried in the backpack quite often, I think ;)

May I ask how much it cost? Did you get it here in norway or online?

I wonder if we have Gerber and BG to thank for all the new knives with a firesteel in the handle or in the sheath?
They probably did'nt invent the Idea, but they must certainly have played a big part in the consepts popularity.

It was bought at Skitt Fiske here in Sandefjord for NOK 259,-- (picked it up at their store, so no postage and handling) :)

Here's a picture to compare the size of the Swedish Fireknife and a Mora 2000:

Thanks!
I'll see if I can find one in a local store to check how it feels.

is the spine of the knife really as beefy as it looks in the picture?  It looks like it's 6 mm thick! :tu:

No, it isn't.
The spine has about the same thickness as the 2000.
Maybe I can take a few more pictures later this week...

It's pretty much a regular mora aside from the firesteel. They are neat, but i was not particularly impressed. I wonder how far back the tang goes back on it.

It looks like the firesteel retention might just be friction on the diameter of the rod (an observation first made by Lynn on the BG Strata pack), so when the fire steel has been used a few times (has worn) ... then what?

You have to twist the cap of the firesteel to unlock it, it isn't just friction from the rod that keeps it in place. It may eventually wear out, but I suspect that I'll need to replace the whole knife before that happens.

And: no, it's not spectacular if you compare it to, say, a Fällkniven F1 with a separate firesteel - but I think it's quite OK for the price, and the use I have in mind for it.

I wish they made it a tad bit bigger.

The blade has an odd grind as well, I wonder why they didn't just go with one of the regular models and use this handle instead?

Still, pretty neat overall. :tu:

Good to carry a firestick all-right, but does anyone really go out in the wild without a pocket lighter?

I usually never carry a pocketlighter in the woods, but I do have a pack of matches packed in a ziplock bag.

Butane lighters don't work as well in high altitudes or in cold weather, you have to keep them near your body or warm them first or the gas won't come out = no fire. Also, they are not wind resistant. Petrol lighters will dry out, especially if you use them in windy conditions, as that uses a lot more lighter fluid. Also neither of those will work when wet (rain, snow, ...). Firesteels are wind resistant, work when wet, will give you thousands of fires, ... Of course knowing how to use them requires practice and preparation, knowing what tinder to use, ...

All that said, I usually carry an Imco Triplex and a mini bic as main sources of fire, but a firesteel is in my bag too, just in case.

Birch bark is the best tinder in my nick of the woods. Instant flame from a ferro rod.  :tu:

Edit: SAK's and Mora's you gotta love them!

Sharp, strong, eager. I wish it were just a tad longer and wider. (No, wait...  ::) ) I haven't tried the ferro rod yet, I'm sure it works though. I kind of wonder about the tang, it's injection molded into the rubber handle only up to where the ferro rod's room begins, so it is kind od short for me. No signs that made me worry about construction so far.   :woohoo: :dd:

Couldn't get better pics, sorry.

Here it is. I've been using the Mora clipper for years and have yet to experience any problems due to the shorter tang. :salute:

Thanks for the info, it's good to hear they are solid. I like how Mora show drawings of the knives tangs on their site. I think the Fireknife is based on the Companion knife they make http://www.moraofsweden.se/adventure/companion-blue with the addition of the ferro rod (that diminishes the tang).
That Eriksson #510 looks very tempting...

The YouTube video from the Light My Fire site briefly shows the x-ray of the tang, which extends past the hole where the firesteel goes. I attached a screen cap. :tu:
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

 Thank you. That makes perfect sense to me now. I find this a really good knife for the cash it cost, though I was wondering how could it "behave" like this, given the short tang!
