Mini mag
on: January 22, 2008, 01:23:01 AM
Part of the packaged I received from Calvin was a minimag AA and also a AAA.  I have really taken to the AA as I like the way it feels in the hand.

Are they any good upgrades for it that keep it as an incandescent or am I really only looking at going LED?

Thanks

Benner

For LED drop in replacements check LED-Replacement.com.  I am a repeat customer.

I ended up getting the Nighteyes Led. This one.  http://www.niteize.com/productdetail.php?category_id=28&product_id=110 It was 5$ at Wallmart. Well worth it. You can spend a bunch on some mods, but it still is just a Mag light. It will take a beating with this and have no problems.

This is the tail cap I went with. http://www.niteize.com/productdetail.php?category_id=28&product_id=125  About 10 bucks also at A Wallmart Very slick unit and well made.

It wont win a throw contest with a Surefire, but for a knock around light you could do a lot worse, and it is personally the light I keep in the car, my Camp, and my work truck. (of course I still carry on the belt the Surefire G2L) :ahhh

Well, I bought a Nite Ize conversion kit w/ IQ switch.. It has the IQ switch with five settings: high, med, low power and then slow and fast strobe. And it has a 1 Watt LED bulb.. Its not a bad light by any means..

If you've got some money to burn and you want to keep the minimag an incan... you can always try doing this!

that is a neet little switchout, but only 35 mins of runtimee would just kill me. I would just stick with the LED dropo ins.

Yeah, you don't do the Hotwire kit if you want runtime :)

I have several of the LED upgrades. I think the best is the Terra Lux and then the Nite Ize 1 watt upgrade. I also have the Nite Ize 3 LED which is the cheapest and IMHO is the best bang for the buck. It isn't as bright as the others but it is a lot cheaper and WAY better than the incan.

I also have the Nite Ize IQ switch. Pretty neat with the 5 modes but the single mode tail clickie isn't too bad either.

I have found a Terralux 5 watt upgrade that looks pretty cool, but at a cost of £25 over here (around $50) I may stay away from that atm. :D

The niteize 3 led looks pretty good value though.

Elektro Lumens will be adding a MiniMag drop-in to their lineup.  It will have a Seoul Semiconductor P4 LED driven by a Micropuck driver.  The $45 price tag includes the drop-in, optic and tail switch.

These aren't available yet, but will be soon.

I have had pretty good luck with the Niteize LED(The lower powered one).I just picked up another conversion from them with the basic on/off tail cap/So far so good.Since I have gone to the LED,my battery consumption has gone way down.I use my lights constantly at night while I break down and put together the doubles that I pull.I was going through a set of double A's every week.,not to mention bulbs.

The only thing I reccomend is to put a couple of drops of SuperGlue between the LED base and the base of the Mag where the light plugs in.This keeps the light from popping up when turning the bezel on.

I sure will.  I visit Wayne's forums nearly every day.  He's been producing most of the recent items in very limited numbers, so I try to stay informed about what is available.

Quit as in broke, or ran out of battery?

As in broke. I've tried to figure out the issue to no avail. Think it's in the head twisty switch, but can't see anything wrong.

Any progress on the search for your upgrade mate I am thinking of the Terralux with the 50 lumen output as the big boy might get a bit hot in such a small torch
