Had seen a review from a facebook post, where a version of those was used in 3rd wold countries. They could use to charge cell phones, charge batteries for lighting, do cooking, ect. It was a much larger unit. - Was not able to track down the exact post, but the photos here show a similarity.

Seen another post just yesterday of some cheaper zinc siding and bricks used for African slum areas for better housing. They were using a small solar array however, and solar-friendly construction and water gathering techniques to stay warmer, live better. The bricks was used to raid the flooring to keep the occupants off from the wet ground.

Edit: Found it. High-tech shack brings solar power to slums

Wonder what the longevity will be on these stoves, and the life expectancy of the power-converter module?

the stoves themselves should last forever.. you would have to be seriously negligent to destroy one to the elements.

The electronic module would probably need very little parts since it based on this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_effect

Again you could make it pretty bulletproof if you wanted to. I'm sure the prototype components probably came out of a 12v car cooler. Personally i'm suprised there aren't hundreds of homemade hobo biolite stoves given the price of originals.

Next council clean up campaign i might keep an eye out for some coolers  :D
Actually thats not so crazy, i could have additional 12v power generated from my cars exhaust manifold!

Sadly they are refusing to sell the larger versions to anyone who isn't impoverished in Africa.

There are also thermoelectric generator pots, which seem more practical to me because you can use other heat sources.
