I thought we had more Opinel fans here.  I think that is pretty cool.  And you all know you wouldn't be able to stop blowing the whistle.

 >:( Smurfin ridiculous! I'm so tired of all this B Grylls serrated bullsmurf! I apologise for harsh language but its painful to see all these products made to lure of money from city people that never actually whittled a simple stick.

I'm out to chop some firewood with my brand new splitting maul! I'll imagine some stupid toy "tactical" product for every blow, gives me energy.  :D

I'm not so sure

If you ignore the whistle and depending on if you like serrations on a blade  :-\ this answers the only problem I have with opies which is they can be stiff if the wood gets damp and swells up

I think the plastic handle makes this a near perfect knife

But we do need more pictures of Mauls and Axes  :pok:

I can understand serrations if you're on a boat or some environment where you cut a lot of fibrous materials. But anyone who've ever whittled a stick know how useless serrations are for woodwork. At least in Sweden, where we have a lot of forest, serrations do not make sense in an outdoor environment.

Sorry if I sounded harsh. It's just that people who want to get out, whittle some sticks, build a shelter, use the knife for fishing etc are better of with a plain edge knife. All this "survival" stuff is just packaging. I think it can border on the dangerous to ignore the tool insights that have come to mature over millennia for some stuff designed to look cool.

If someone is serious about safety, they don't bring a plastic folding knife with a whistle, they bring a proper sheath knife and a whistle that they have sewn on to their jacket.

I'll promise to get back with pictures of axes  :tu:

P.S. Sorry if it sounds like I'm talking down on someones gear. You're absolutely free to enjoy your OHO black fully serrated folders anywhere you like and in whatever fashion.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you. I very rarely use serrations, even in a marine environment. The sheath knife I'll carry will be plain edge. The reasons are that a plain edge knife will do other stuff as well as rope cutting, if I NEED a rope knife QUICK it'll be on a rope that's taut which means a sharp plain edge knife will do the trick. Note, I sharpen with coarse stones rather than chase for a polished edge, so there is a micro tooth form which helps. The other reason ... I don't have any serrated sheath knives

The only time I use serrations is if there's something wrapped round my prop, then I'll be head and shoulders into the weed hatch with an old bread knife which lives in the engine room for that very purpose

I am in agreement here- I think this looks like a good no nonsense knife that should be able to fulfill any survival needs you may have, at least as well as any other knife.  I know I'd be in for one of these.

I like it. :tu: If it comes in PE i'll buy one for sure. I was just thinking when Mat made his thread on that cold steel twistmaster opinel "tribute" how a plastic opinel would be a nice thing to have. Great steel + no swelling or the handle.

The whistle doesn't bother me at all, it doesn't get in the way and could be useful in case of an emergency or for signaling. I've been in a situation on the top of a mountain, (1600 meters / 5200 ft) with wind blowing at me shouting at the top of my lungs to my friend who was about 20meters / 65 ft away and he couldn't hear a thing. A whistle on the other hand... I never go to the mountains or woods without one any more. It's easier to blow a whisle than it is to shout, and the sound carries further.

Ya I'd take one in PE.  If I want fully serrated I'll carry a blade that is.. its called a saw.  A knife is for cutting, a serrated knife (saw) is for sawing.  So to me a combo edge is part knife part saw... which to me is weird and I wouldnt dont care for them.  I understand they have specific uses like crashed aircraft skin ripper etc, but Id still rather have a knife.

I'm with you guys... I despise CE blades on anything under 6".  You just don't get enough of either type of edge for them to be useful.  If they're not much more than regular Opinel's, and they made one with a PE blade, I'd certainly consider picking a couple up to put in with the camping supplies.

As it is, The CE blade kills it for me.  Maybe they could find a way to make one with two blades, one plain, and the other fully serrated?  But I already have a Byrd Wings I bought specifically for that reason... to have a beater camping knife with both a useable plain and serrated edge blade.
The first Noble Truth: life is suffering.  Only by accepting that fact can we transcend it.
