my first charge tti, and some problems with it.
on: February 28, 2012, 11:13:14 PM
i haven't been on the forum for a while, so ill start by saying sorry for my absence.

sooo.... today i got my first charge tti, i was very impressed. but at a closer look it seems that one of the scales has lines going down it and isn't smooth like the other sides.

also there seems to be some gaps in the handles(cant get a good photo of that).

oh and the file touches the scales so it scrapes going in and out. which my wave files does not do.

what do you guys think? seem odd? should i make a fuss or ignore it?

Both of my Charge Ti's have lines, but not as distinct as that.

With the file rubbing against the scale, I would be inclined to return it to Whitby for warranty work/replacement.

so it is quite bad then. i see the lines on the other side but they are faint compared to these. ive e-mailed them about it and send a picture so now im waiting to see what they say.

i dont want to sound cheap but seeing as i just got it, i dont want to pay for postage to get the product that i should of got in the first place.

so ill wait to see what they say.

I've found those sorts of inconsistencies to be common on Charge titanium scales.  It annoyed me greatly when I got my first TTi.  I've seen it to varying extents on a dozen Ti or TTi models since then.  I've just gotten used to it.  I'm not saying that you should though.

The lines look like they are the product of a worn insert during the machining process.  I am unsure of how they mill the titanium, as I've never worked that metal, but with aluminum and steel a pressed carbide insert is used and when it wears down(usually fine chips in the insert) you get an increased rough finish.  It could also be a first run piece after a speed/feed adjustment, meaning they were probably running the shell mill(I'm guessing that's the tool they use) too fast horizontally for the spindle to keep up.

either way, if it bothers you then ask them to fix it.  I know I would want at least a uniform finish, especially with a "cream of the crop" tool like a TTi.  I wouldn't want to pay a premium price essentially FOR those scales only to have them not match.

On the other hand, it's a titanium encased TOOL.  Its gonna get beat up anyway.   :D  tons of help from me, huh?

I've had several TTi's and the lines are inherent in their process. Also, I have not had one where the file didnt rub a little. Hate to say it, as much as I love LM, their tolerances just seem to allow these things. Not saying the factory cant find you perfection but you would be hard pressed to exchange it through a retailer and get one better.

My TTi also has lines, but again, not as distinct as that, and mine doesn't have a file that rubs but what it does have ...

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,26164.0.html

In my opinion, the Charge TTi is one awesome tool, but it does seem to have a lot of things that can "go wrong" with it, sadly ...

In your case, if the lines (and file rubbing) bother you now, I would try to get another one, because you'll just keep looking at the problems instead of how great a tool this is.

I think the whole charge series has had file rubbing issues.

I remember one posted a few months ago that had the file reversed, so that the diamond file was on the inside. I wish LM did that as standard for all future Wave/Charge tools.
