Best Budget Knives
on: March 01, 2012, 10:25:06 AM
There are probably hundreds of posts about this around the web already, but I am just wondering, what is your favorite/best knife for camping under $50?
See, I don't actually have a knife now, that's why I'm asking you guys what would be a good first knife I could get without breaking the bank.
Simply tell me what is your best knife(s) and why.
Btw I will be using It mostly in steamy places such as rainforests, but not to the extent to where I would need a machete/parang.
I will be using it to chop saplings, carve feather sticks/wood, cut food, split small logs etc
Oh and I would prefer it to be a fixed blade, but you can just post ur knife if u think it's good

Thanks for viewing and pls give your opinions.  :D

Any Mora in SS, since you will be cutting food and work in a wet environment should do most tasks.

You may also consider a SAK with two blades (dirty work-food) with a saw.

Dks beat me to it  :)

Without a doubt I would say a Mora but they might be a bit small for doing much battoning
So how about something by cold steel?  :tu:

Not sure about the chopping saplings bit but the mora range. I have the clipper. Fantastic knife for the price. It will leave you with enough change for a good quality folding saw.
Blimey looks like a few of us are on the ball today.

OK, going back to topic after some people  went off at a tangent...
Here are some pictures of moras:

Mora clipper SS(Bahco branded, cheap) in the middle.
Mora 511 non-SS (cheap) at the bottom
Mora Bushcraft non-SS triflex (not so cheap) at the top

Moras with holsters:

SAK and Schrade with saws

I have used the mora 511 hard, for me. Cut Bamboo, leather, wooden branches..
still sharp.

I also have to vote for a Mora or Marttiini fixed blade paired with a saw-equipped SAK, say a Camper or Huntsman. :)

I'm not sure if someone here mentioned the mora clipper, I was trying to see that dirty picture in the colouring book. :ahhh

I used to carry a bigger knife but since I tried the mora + SAK combo, I never looked back. And if I need a bigger saw, those folding ones are great to have.

Thanks to ur advice, I'm deciding to get a mora.
Except...I don't know which one to get!
See, there are so many out there, I am lost to choosing the right one for my needs(as said in my first post)
Hm...maybe I could get two?
Anyways, do have any opinions?
u can recommend anything, even multiple blades, as long as it falls within the $50 budget.

This again.

First decide if you want a SS or Carbon steel one. That should narrow down your choices, a bit.

With your budget you should be able to afford one of the "better" moras, like the 2000 or the bushcraft, though there should not be a huge performance difference between them and the cheaper models. Buying both is also an option  :D

Note that moras are not really designed for "batoning" through large pieces of wood, so you may want to also get a large SAK (like the Wenger Ranger series) or a folding saw or Axe, or consider a heavier knife, like the ones made by Ontario (I have no experience with them).

Here is alink for some models of mora with a short description: http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

and Ontario:

http://www.ontarioknife.com/catalog/category/20Th

I also have some Schrade USA xt2B  knives in  440C that looked pretty solid; on ebay for under $20.

Also,
I think it’s a good idea to go to a shop where you can pick them up as the handles might feel a bit small on some models

The Hultafors Paul posted might have slightly bigger handles  ;)

yeah the green handled heavy duty hulafors model GK has a longer and much fatter handle then there HVK model with the orange handle, i like both handles, but the GK feels more solid in my fat hands  :D
