So I bought a Svord peasant...
on: February 29, 2012, 04:20:48 AM
Well to be honest for close to $20, it's pretty crappy. Everything is lopsided on it, the grind, the edge, the wood handle, and the stop pin isn't even in the right place to stop the blade from smack into the screw. General fit and finish is horrible, nothing really lines up.

For the same price you can get some much better made knives from, say Byrd, so what's the appeal on these peasant knives, other than it's crappy and rustic?

I have a few and a couple more on order... Never actually used any of them. The plastic ones seem to be the better value for money and cheaper.
The wooden ones need to be "finished" by the buyer.. I think sparky123?? sorted one out some time ago?  :D
Their grinds are always lopsided, but sharp.
The quality of the steel is considered good, though I would have preferred a SS version.
Their appeal is in the look and the old-fashioned feel.
Also, they offer a legal “locking” and easy opening folder (though a bit long) since you can keep it locked with your hand but it has no actual locking mechanism
For a collector they are nice, though a slipjoint would  work just as good or better.

If you like the style have a look at Higonokami knives from Japan too!  :tu:

They don't lock Mate and you will have to take a bit off the blade to make it legal in the UK  :salute:

Though frankly if you pulled it out in public you're going to create a stir :)  I don't advise it.

The plastic ones are definitely the better value.  I have two, both of which were gifts so the price is irrelevant, they're both priceless ;) :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

While I've only briefly owned a Banana (aka yellow Svord) before giving it to my uncle - he was the one who'd had me order it for him - I found the design neat, albeit a bit rough.  I do find the wooden scaled version dks posted to be beautiful though. :tu:

I thought about the plastic handle ones, but they just don't look right with the blade.

Yeah mine will have to meet the belt sander when I have time, going to regrind the edge and at least make the two handle halves the same shape.  ::) Will get rid of the varnish too for some oil/wax.

I shortened the top blade and added a finger choil to the bottom one (and Oak scales) so they are under 3”

@ Jzmtl Good luck with that  :tu:
Use the right sized screwdriver as the brass screws are very soft  ::)
I used Teak oil on mine as that’s what I had lying around at the time  :)

Well it more or less fits now. Missed a spot on handle but not going to worry about it. Mineral oil and beeswax gave it a rustic loom to match the blade.

It gets seriously sharp I'll give you that, but I'll see how rust resistant is it (I don't care about surface rusting on blade, but don't want to see edge rust away).

Note the pin is hidden on mine, seems they changed that. Also I reversed the screws for a presentation look.

Heh I did went a bit overboard with the sander, it's now around 20° inclusive. The edge on the other side is a bit more dramatic due to the low primary grind.

I was talking about the scales but that looks like you’ve done a great job

I had one for a couple of years and then last month I swapped it for something I thought was a fair swap, but it turned out to be crappy. I really regret it.

Mine had wooden scales, and once you've worked on them a bit it's pretty comfortable to use, and the steel is fantastic at taking an edge. I'd recommend them for the money.

Yes, thanks for that but I can't justify the cash, and how would I learn my lesson if I just bought myself a new one eh?
