I am having a little trouble getting hold of a Tec 40.  Any ideas where I could get one?

Amazon.UK has one here. That price is pretty high though, I think they average @10$ at retail stores in the U.S.

That price sucks!  :(  I am also looking for the rubber clad, newer one as well.

Any other suggestions for a good AA or AAA incand?

Just bought a Tec 40 off of ebay for $26.40 inc shipping to the UK!  :)  I know that's more than you would pay over the pond, but it's the best by far that I have found over here.

Remember that there are a fair amount of options for bulbs since the light is 6V and takes common PR base units.

In the future, if you want to convert it to LED, there are numerous drop-ins that fit the bill. I typically run either a Mag 4-cell Xenon bulb in mine with NiMH or a Mag 3-cell Krypton overdriven on alkalines. I did use a Mag 2-cell bulb once but it only lasted for a few minutes before it blew, it was like a laser beam though.

I just thought of another advantage for having/getting an Incan; "When someone calls you a caveman they won't be a liar!"  :pok:

I will only be using alkalines when I get it, so do you think I would still see an improvement with the 4-cell xenon?  I want it to still hold it's reliability.

Oh, yeah. The 4-cell Xenon bulb is made to run on 4x1.5 Volt alkalines.

The last bastion of incan use is law enforcement . Arguments run as follows , more throw ( not in the 3-6vdc range ) , better depth/color rendition , better at penetrating car window tints , not effected as much by ambient urban light pollution . The newer top of the line LED lights are fast closing these gaps .

Unless you are talking about high end lawenforcement lights ( some of the bigger /better Streamlites , Tigerlites , the bigger Surefire Incans ) , these advantages may not be so great . Take a look at your average police lite (3-4dcell maglite ) , typically the batts. are halfway thru there usefull life and profound yellowing is happening . Most of the batteries used are alkalines , these guys dont like cold , in winter conditions performance is further degraded . The boys in blue may well wind up with a lite that is performing less well than a regulated 6v LED . I have proved this to a couple of LEOs of my aquaintence . The one clear disadvantage of the 2xcr123 lites , is that they are nowhere as good impact weapons as old skool maglites . These observations dont apply with as much force to the beter Streamlite rechargeable duty lites , Streamlite seems to have a pretty good share of the police rechargable market .

Regrettably rechargables have their own share of problems .

Paul Kim , Surefires chief designer has said he is done with designing incans . We may also see LED improvements every 6months - to a year .

Its fair to say that the incans share of the market will decrease .

Chris

Well my Tec 40 arrived today.  I like it's shape and the way it sits in the hand (I have the rubber clad black one) and it is a good size as well.

I first of all tried it with the halogen bulb that was included and I thought it looked ok.  Very "ringy" though.  So I then tried the Maglite Xenon that Spoon suggested and bloody hell it was soooooooo much brighter!  It was also a much smoother beam.  It is a great flashlight for the price.

Thanks (again) Spoon for the flashlight advice.  I can see me using this this one very often.

Here are some pics of my new light.  I really like the rubber grip and it's size,  it is really comfortable to hold.

It's a real good size.  It is also slightly squashed which makes it easier to hold.

Pretty bright too! 8)
