Sharpen the fish scaler?
on: April 09, 2017, 08:31:25 PM
I'm nearing the end of 3+ months of non-stop work and have a few mod ideas I've been thinking about doing. One of my crazier ideas is to sharpen the fish scaler on my Champion by basically just grinding it following the curve that is already there until the points are sharp. Has anyone tried this? Does it even remotely approximate a serrated blade? Worth a try?

I did
Not worth it IMO, will not cut sh*t but I find I have used a couple times the tips if sharpened (as a fork or point for digging, picking and catching things, like olives, pickles, etc.) and as a makeshipt plastic banding cutter or wrapping opener
My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

Oh my! I was looking for pictures of a fish scaler in action, actually scaling a fish, but instead I'm now going to sharpen mine and use it as a pickle fork. Because... pickles are awesome.

Charles.

Some makers that put them in non-Swiss knives gave it an SD tip. Maybe regrind the tip to 2.5mm thickness, that way it can be used as an extra reach terminal strip driver .

Sharpening the tips a bit, I might consider trying that.

Not sure the fish scaler is knife blade material though

I wouldn't bother sharpening it.

I wonder if I'm the only person to use it on a fish?

Well, I haven't been fishing since I was 13 (some time in the past century) and I don't eat fish either so I wouldn't know about these things  Sharp tips would dig into the fishes' flesh, I imagine?

I only use alox SAKs for food related tasks, though :ahhh

Not sure it's needed. I've use fish scalers for ripping down cardboard as is fine, and even sheetrock- the lack of anything sharp when you're stabbing a wall that has wiring it it is kinda nice.

I did this a few years ago. Makes a great olive fork.

Anyone ever grind the hook remover completely off and mod the end into a screwdriver? I have an old German fishing MT that has a fish scaler designed to have a screwdriver tip on the end, and it's got some great reach.
