Yes I believe this to be the first and only all black bladeless sak. If there's another one out there shout out and let us know
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Also the first to have single layer end opening awl and file? I think in general the tool layout is pretty unique, considering the lack of blades and openers.

Is that (gabon) ebony, Steve? Great jigging mate
The white sapwood is quite soft. I had some off cuts left with a distinct look. Would have been a waste to throw away, so did some whittling. Ouch..carved my finger as well!
Anyway
can wait to see your black beauty finished!

It's African black wood and its not soft at all. I burned up 2 dremel sanding disks on one side alone. It's beautiful but a pita to work.

Slight change in plans, we are going for all black scales, leaving out the softer yellow sapwood parts.

According to the guy at the woodworking store. African black wood is harder than ebony. So these should be better in the long run.

Raukodur, please note that african blackwood is not quite the same as black ebony.
African blackwood takes a high polished finish. Black ebony is matte black. It's also more brittle, and sinks in water. Just trying to help.
edit: not a blackwood at all, but if you want the best wood you can get, try

Thanks for the words of wisdom Waterlander
I chose the blackwood after reading about its hardwood properties, and also its dark brown/black appearance.
In terms of why I have decided to go for all black and not include the yellow sapwood, having worked with it Tattoosteve confirms it is not as hard as the black section.
I was just reading about Lignum Vitae, very interesting! An extraordinary natural product.

My pleasure mate.
Afr.blackwood has a brownish-black shine to it. Gabon ebony a greyish-matte-black.
Both are very nice. IMO good choice not to use the sapwood, although it looks nice with the black.
Now hold on before making your mind up. If you still like a contrasting color instead of all black wood, then take a look at
Makassar Ebony
. Color is a dark chocolate-brown with black stripes. Leaves a beautiful metalish soft shine after polishing. Beautiful, very hard, very dense, asian ebony. Another rare and special ebony is
Marble Cake Ebony
. Color yellow-white black. Buffalo or cow horn would be an option too.
(But I think it will chip on the long run)

I hope I'm not complicating things, I just like wood!
Whatever you choose I'm sure Steve will make you a winner!

Amazing, very beautiful looking types of wood.
In this instance I think the blackwood will suffice, for reasons of availability and price, and also because I think the all black will suit the black cerakote tools well as well, with the exposed brass pins giving a little bit of contrast.

With the cerakote, how does it wear with time? Does it come off in the hands like black oxide at all, especially where there is constant friction (e.g. scissor edges)?
I notice there are some patches of the coating darker than others (gives it a cool all black camo look), does that stay that way, or will it even out?

The darker color is oil. It's a constant color. It wears eventually but according to Jeff (coater) it aids in the lubricator factor.
