Small Blade
on: February 02, 2008, 04:40:23 AM
"A" or "B" would create enough options to kill a man, and I can't even identify "B" model anyway, so I'll ask on a Blade basis instead.

Given the option (in my mind on a two-layer, no reverse side tools, 84 to 93mm Vic, but you can imagine whatever you want)
Would you rather the Reamer or the Small pen-knife?

If pressed, I'd take the Reamer, but I enjoy the small blade on the  :climber: , both as "safer" for small jobs, and to preserve the larger blade a bit in abuse situations.

Reamer...it gives more diversity when you're down to two layers.

Hi

This is an interesting thought... after seeing my forum friend above all thought reamer, I initially though rubbish its the small blade BUT...

...then after 5 mins thought I am in the reamer camp as well. I do use the reamer for a multiply of situation, actually if in doubt  thats would I would try first.!

Thanks
deano

I guess that's Reamer: 1 Small Blade: 0

So why do people go for the Patriot and Bantam models?

While we've got everyone lovin' reamers.

Prefer the straight reamer or the perpendicular to the handle one?

Personnely the straight one, like the one on the farmer/soldier/pioneer/si, but you can generate a lot of torque with the one's on the 85mm and 91mm :)

I rarely use the reamer/awl on Victorinox models other than the Pioneer series.  The backspring awl is great for rough sewing though.

I've never used the backspring awl on a Wenger.  It's nearly useless IMO, and it's one of a few reasons why I don't carry Wengers.

I agree, it's not as good as the one on a Vic, but I wouldn't say it was useless though :), mind you the one on the SI, is better than the Vic equivilent if you as me :)

I agree that the one on the SI is ground a bit better than the Vic.  The cellidor Wengers need a reamer, not just an awl.  I didn't say it was useless--it will punch a hole.

Absolutely a small blade for me.

I use the big blade for nearly everything, which allows me to leave the small blade alone so it stays very sharp and relatively clean for 'emergency' uses.

Typical small blade tasks are first aid related:
-cutting out deeply buried wood splinters
-slicing open a blister, then trimming away the loose skin before applying a moleskin patch

It's a comfort to know that a sharp, clean blade is always waiting in reserve.

I can't live on 2 layers.....

I guess if I had to I'd take the awl though.
