Any other wildlife photographers?
on: April 03, 2012, 07:05:26 PM
So that's cool that we have a photography forum here, most photography forums get so carried away with pointless bickering and fanboyism about gear that I stay away cough*Dpreview*cough.

I make a few bucks from my photography doing portraits, events and youth sports (used to do weddings but to much stress for me).  But my passion is wildlife and nature photography.  Lately I've been so busy with other stuff I haven't got out near as much as I like and I need some motivation.

So if there are any other wildlife and nature guys in here I would love to be inspired by your shots.  Or maybe "show me yours' and I'll show you mine."

I don't do any professional stuff but I found this guys traipsing about my nieghbourhood... I live 5km from downtown Calgary! I see more pheasants out here than I ever did back home in nova scotia. We raised them and released them many years ago.

Post your photos. I would love to see them.

You will find that everyone on this forums is friendly, helpful, and laid back. I hear you about other photography web sites. I have found that the majority of photographers that frequent those type of forums are a tad stuck up and/or are rabid fan boys.

I do plenty of multi-tool photography...but I haven't had much opportunity to visit the local parks and natural byways for the past couple of years. I do plan on getting back into it someday soon.  :)

I already know my photos, I wanna see others.

But maybe I can get the ball rolling with a couple of my favorite animals.

Pika, AKA rock rabbits.  Not a big apex predator or anything but I think they are neat, and they are fairly rare.

I just think Marmots are cool... even cooler when they are boxing.

Well I'm certainly no wildlife photographer, but I am very pleased with this one.  Taken a while back when on a short break.

Wow this site just gets better and better,
everything i am interested in is covered from camping, survival, and of course mt's, and wildlife photography,i am very much a beginner in bird(feathered) photography, but loving it.
there's some great pics on here, the smily frog is great, and the Buck raiding the bird feeder is super, and the humming bird is a stunner, and cute chipmunks too excellent,

like i said i am very much a beginner and still practicing,

those are lovely as well Murry.  The kingfisher is just a stunning bird and sadly I've only seen a couple in my life with no chance of getting any sort of photo, let alone a good one. :salute:

Thanks Gareth,
As for the Kingfisher,i remember saying the same thing early last year and then later that year this fellow landed in front of me,
before that i only ever saw an electric blue colour flitter across a mere.
so you never know.

Thanks Gareth and Murray. I like the bird photos here. I really need to get a 100-400L.

I use a Bigma 50-500mm lens. I can heartily recommend it as quite often, that 50mm has come in quite handy on a nature walk.

The Bigma is certainly nice but I want to stay all Canon and the 100-400L is a great lens value.

The 100-400L is a nice lens. Only issue I had with it was its a push pull zoom (The lens is known for sucking in dirt over time). That was the reason why I went with the Bigma. Then I found that the extra wide and long of the Bigma comes in handy for what I like to do, which is walk around and take photos of opportunity. A Bushhawk shoulder mount rounds out my wildlife outfit. :salute:

Here's a couple recent ones.  Sorry about the quality, as I shot them with my crappy kit lens.

Thanks!  There are some fantastic pics here!  I really need to get a good telephoto lens. My longest (and favorite) is my Minolta Maxxum 70-210 f/4 (beer can lens), but I'd like to get something up to 400 or 500mm.

Very nice Derek,
brilliant capture of the swan chasing the canada goose, excellent
all i use is a 70-300mm(can pick them up quite cheap now),i don't have the funds for the big glass,
my first dslr was an a200(super little camera imho),never did get the beer can for it as they were hard to get and people did not want to let them go when they did get one as they are a super all rounder.

Crappy phone camera warning...

Found this guy on a morning fishing trip, still very cold out so it didn't move even when I got close. I went around it after taking the photo.

Lovely shots Murray!  My camera is the a100.  I'm waiting for something to go wrong with it so I can upgrade :)  it is a great camera though for the cost and being able to use the great af Minolta lenses.
