Let me know what you think? Even after I shut off camera I still couldn't get through the limb with the GEC. This was dry dry dry wood also.

They probably figured 99% of the people who bought one won't ever use it.  :P

Thanks for the Video Ashley.  :tu:  Do you think its poor cutting capabilities are from the amount of surface are of the saw. The GEC saw is much "taller" that the others and in my mind that would be working against yourself. I am also wondering about the teeth on the GEC. How do they compare to the Vic and Wenger?

How they are off set on the wenger and victorinox these are just one row straight down the middle. The saw is also very thick. On a 1-10 1 not cutting 10 a victorinox cut I'd give it a 3-4. Hope that helps. Ash

Thanks Ash.  There is nothing like an actual test to learn the truth of something.
Yoiu can tell by the sound of the GEC saw in the vidoe that it is doing as much rubbing as sawing.  By the way it jams in the cut I bet it is not tapered in thickness from front to back like a saw should be.  Aside from the single (not double) row of teeth.
In The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual is a test of Officer-size SAKs:
"In a test of 30 seconds cutting with sharp wood saws on 1 ½ inch
square redwood the new-design Wenger was the winner, barely ahead of
Victorinox; then the Chinese and the Spanish Aitor about tied, just ahead
of the old-design Wenger; the German Korium proved to be rather ineffective."

Excellent video, thanks :tu:

If you have a LM Juice model with a saw, I'd love to see you throw it into the mix.

Last year I did a test and the Juice saw was the overall winner.

I don't have one but if someone would want to loan me one I'll test it against a vic and wenger. The GEC is now on its way back to its owner, as I just borrowed it to test. I've been attending a lot of knife shows so my budget is quite extended at this time. Not this weekend but the one after I will be attending a big show in another state so I've been saving for it.

On another forum a guy stated why the lumberjack was made and I'm thinking he's onto something. Lumberjacks like saws and they do stop to eat lunch so they use the saw on the gec to cut their sandwich.

Great vid Ashley :tu: shame about the GEC saw, particular as its sold as a saw with a saw logo on its side, rather poor performance :o my most used saw is the one on my Vic Champ, followed closely by the Wenger pocket/mini grip that I got from you Ashley :salute:

I read that a gec distributor plans to take the saw to a saw company to have it "fixed". So I'm eager to see how that works out. Like I said on another forum. I don't want gec to bluntly copy swiss companies but they might want to take a look at the saw since its proven to work. :tu:

They just need to make it thinner and sharpen/set/fleam the teeth, that's how almost all the handsaw are made and they work great.

I did post these things before in the review section but following this thread and the similar thread in BF I believe that most of the younger people have not seen or used an older small thin blade wood saw with a single line of teeth, used for pruning tasks etc.

In these saws the thin teeth will be bent a bit in succession to the left or right  (L-R-L-R-L-R..) creating:
1. A thicker cutting edge compared to the actual body of the saw blade
2. A channel between the teeth for the saw dust to flow.

This way the saw did not get stuck by sawdust congealing and clogging the teeth and the body of the blade always had enough clearance going through the wood, so there was no touching of the sides, so less friction. (a similar system is used in metal saw blades too).

As the saw was used the teeth would tend to align, slowing down the saw and making it stick, so after some time (depending on the use it could be some months) you would use a tool to again move the teeth to the side and sharpening them a bit, rejuvenating the saw.

Modern saws tend to use thicker blades, with two rows of teeth, but again one tooth is to the left then the tooth following in the next row is to the right and so on. The cutting edge is thick and the body of the saw blade narrows down (gets slimmer) as you go upwards, so the body can move without sticking through the cut wood. This is also the system used in SAKs, multitools etc. This system does not need aligning of the teeth, though it is harder to repair if damaged.
The lumberjack has a single row of, thick, teeth aligned on a uniform thickness blade (From my memory) so for it to work you will need to bend the teeth sideways, like in a traditional saw and to sharpen them. (or redo the whole saw…) :D

If you only sharpen them then the actual cutting edge will be smaller than the body (pointy edge) and the saw will get stuck, similar to trying to slice an apple with a thick knife; the body will get stuck at some point and you will need to crack the apple to move the knife through, something that cannot be done with a wood saw, in wood.

The end, going back to my cave now..
