Gerber mod:MP425?!
on: April 04, 2012, 12:08:37 AM
Done it!The forced marriage on a MP400 and a MP450 has come to pass :D

I now have a bladeless flicky tool.As Gareth had said elsewhere, the retaining bolts can be undone with a set of Mole(Vice)grips.I gotta say it was far easier than I expected.I needed to add an extra spacer as the file is spightly narrower than the blade.I'll add more pixs soon.

 :D :D :D

Nice one John  :tu: as you know we both had the same idea ... again

I passed up the opportunity to grab a 450 before as I had other things to get instead, but I'll definitely be doing this mod at some point  :tu: My 400 has the corkscrew too, so a mod like this would actually make a Pioneer or Farmer carryable alongside

Very nice and legal. I still have my old mp400. It's lonely it may be time to carry it after seeing this.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Again,cheers  guys!

@Gareth,I know what your saying. Both the 400 and the 450 are neat MTs in thier own regards, and the 425 has been silly money to do(2 tools, admittedly neither was full price, and the 450 better than half price, and the smurfing vice grips!),but its fully but fully UK legal :salute:,and its fun to use and carry.

Thats 3 blade free multis I have now

Well, despite what I said before, I have indeed done a bit of modding with my Gerber's.

I give you the Gerber MP475(ish) ;)

Rather than strip my MP450 I got the donor file and awl from my MP600 Sportsman, a MT that has been seeing very little use.  Now I have also realised that I have kept the can opener on there and I really don't need that, so there is a good chance it'll go and the large flat driver will come back.

Well, I've got all the ingredients except time  ::)

Shortly I hope to be unveiling the MP426 (literally the 425+1)

Well, once I realised that the can opener had to go it was going to bug me until it was done.  So here is what, I think, is the finished article;

Small, med and large flat drivers
Phillips driver
File
Awl
Scissors
Bottle opener

Just to note that this isn't really reason-free UK carry, the awl puts pay to that, but this was an exercise in fitting as many of the tools that I find useful onto a MP400 frame.  Gotta say that I'm pretty chuffed with the result. :)

As I was in the mood for taking Gerber's apart I also did a quick blade swap on my MP450, really just wasn't a fan of the Wharncliffe blade, so now it's sporting a spare blade I just happened to have on my bench.

Both tools in bits ... bits repeatedly dropped on floor ... little tabbed washers getting on my smurfing smurfs ... patience level approaching zero ....

Here we go Kirky, the MP426!!!

Simply the MP425 ....

Plus one ....

Well done Al!Always thought that cork screws are a bit odd on MTs,but it adds a lot of charm to the 426...handy too considering its BBQ season!

Cheers John. To be honest I was never really bothered about the 400 ... till I got the chance of one with a corkscrew  :D I love it  :tu: So often with MTs and SAKs you  have to sacrifice having a full 3D Phillips, or chose between a Phillips and a corkscrew, and it's nice when you get both together  :)

Making it knifeless to keep Plod happy when out and about just makes it all the better  :D :D
