FastHawk
on: March 27, 2012, 08:52:58 AM
Hello all. Im sure the question Im after is in here somewhere, but man this is a big forum! :) But I was doing a wrap on a Fast Hawk handle in 550 for a customer and I found it beyond awesome. Im looking to buy one, but I know that they make a larger version as well. It would be for general purpose, camping and such. Perhaps the occasional smashing and destruction of items....... :twak:, but camping mostly. Fasthawk, or larger??? Thanks in advance!

If you really want a good camping tool, go to Wal Mart and buy a regular hatchet for $5.  Hawks are designed more for fighting and penetration and really kind of suck for chopping wood as there's no weight in the head to build the momentum needed to split a log or cut a branch.

That having been said, the Fasthawk is a lot of fun to play with.  I love a good hawk and they are certainly good things to carry for hiking and they can open a keg in record time.... although you may have a bit of a problem tapping it after that!

If you want a tomahawk for utility/camping something with a hammer on the back would be more useful, the spike on fasthawk is really only for breaking things. Cold steel produce a line of hawks for a good price.

The cheap cold steel hawks are good enough to cure the bug of wanting something to play with I think.  I modded a trail hawk and its a nice light duty tool.

How cool is that "hawk" in paclite's avatar? That's because it's mine! It lives in my patrol car and has broken several windows. Also, I agree about the Cold Steel hawks, very affordable designs. Welcome to MT.O, paclite, miss ya on the streets brother. :salute:

I love the CS Vietnam tomahawk.  It's small, lightweight and tough.  I like the Benchmade hawk too, but at $300 it's a bit pricey for me.

Sparky has a point, we need some pics. The demo went well today. The guy that decoyed for me said that Ajo bit him harder today than he did 3 years ago at a handler school we put on. Ajo likes the toy you made better than his "kong' and I gave the second one to a Task Force dog and handler that asked about it. You better make some more, every handler I run into wants one. I'll try and get you pics of Ajo's puppies, I saw them for the first time today, they're true Czech bite dogs just like their daddy. Semper Fi!

Good point Sparky, Ajo loves the peanut butter filled Kong and I get endless hours of pleasure watching my big tough bite dog desperately trying to get peanut butter off the roof of his mouth. I keep threatening to slather the next burglar we catch in peanut butter and let Ajo spend some "quality' time with him.
Ajo also likes donuts and I swear twice a week we go to the donut shop and the ladies there feed him a cake donut with peanut butter on it. Everytime we catch a bad guy after a long track he gets a footlong Sonic coney as a reward but it's hard on me. Ajo farts hot dog for 24 hours and can run me completely out of the car...
I'm convinced he thinks it's funny and does it on purpose so he can have the car to himself!

Thanks  :salute:

Nice cord wraps.... that must take hours

About how long is the head from cutting edge to the point? Looks like 8” (I suppose I could google it really   ::)  ) And do you get to use it much? Is it better than an Ax or do you use it because its the lighter option?

Hey Sparky, it's Stew. PacLite is out of town for a bit but he'll get back with you when he gets in. In the meantime I'll try to help answer some of your questions. I remember seeing the 'Fasthawk" when it was sent to him and it was pretty cool. I also remember it being small and thinking that I couldn't use it for anything but 'cqb". I don't think the head length was quite 8 inches.
Also the cord wrap on that one was very intricate, I think at the customer's request. I've sen him do some very artistic stuff but he seems tp specialize in "tactical/functional. Hope that helps...

I thought after I had nagged him for some pictures the polite thing to do was to ask some questions

What is 'CQB'?

I like tactical/functional  :tu:

Hey Sparky, both of those Hawks were for customers. What little use I got to have them  was fantasizing that I was a Hawk welding ninja!! LOL. I definitely liked the larger Hawk more. It felt perfectly weighted and balanced. CQB stands for Close Quarters Battle. The hawk with the tan wrap in the middle of the handle is the FastHawk. Great backup, but I would agree with Stew and go with a larger option. It takes approx 4-6 hours to properly wrap a hawk. And I believe that from edge to point was approx 7-8 in on the fasthawk. So good eye! :) We mainly specialize in Single point tactical Slings, pistol lanyards, and knife/ Hawk wraps. But if it can be made from 550 cord, we can make it! I appreciate you guys taking a look!! Feel free to ask all the question you like. Im back in town and will be quite a bit more punctual this time a round. Feel free to nagg me all you want Sparky!  :tu:

Thank you,  :tu:
I find it interesting to see what other people use for various jobs, the only CQB I have is against some occasional prickly undergrowth  :)

We both have the same sized hands as I was holding my hand up to your picture and measuring it  ::)

I have only been using/collecting Axes the past couple of years but thanks to this site I'm quite addicted (mostly users)

No Sir I have not. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Ill go post a few pictures up of the various slings, koozies, and bands. After wrapping several Hawks it has sparked my interest as well. As stated earlier though, this is a world that I know next to nothing about! So I am definitely digging the site!! Thanks again for nagging, and giving me a reason to post! LOL
