New Keychain kinfe
on: April 11, 2012, 04:06:39 PM
I'm trying to decide on a knife for very light keychain carry. I have a Fenix E05 and Fox 40 micro whistle currently, took my Leatherman PS4 off, just to heavy for what I wanted. Thinking the Spyderco ladybug is the obvious choice, but not sure which one.

Ladybug plain edge vg10 or zdp189?

Ladybug salt plain edge or hawkbill?

some suggestions to help you .

Victorinox classic, a small lockback, a small slipjoint etc.

If you want VERY light, look at AG Russel Ultimate Penknife.
Otherwise I'd personally go for a Victorinox Classic or Rambler

Well I don't have many keyring sized knives, but if you didn't get along with the PS4 then I don't suppose you'll like the Micra or Style PS/CS, Victorinox Classic or Rambler might be better for you.  About the only dedicated knife I ever carry on my keyring is the Spyderco Grasshopper, an excellent budget option IMO. :)

I have a Hawkbill Salt, I've been very unimpressed with edge retention.  The steel is very hard but it has low wear resistance - little better than 420HC or AUS 6 in everyday usage.

The Ladybug ZDP is very, very, VERY nice and it's flat ground rather than the sabre grind of the standard Ladybug.  For the price difference it's a great option.

There's also the Manbug, which is slightly thicker than the Ladybug but also flat ground in VG-10.

I second the ladybug, I have just an ordinary hollow (or sabre?) ground VG10 Ladybug and it is great - light, non-threatening, easy to resharpen, small

The Ladybug is an awesome keychain knife.  It's a little knife that acts as a big knife with its cutting ability.  If your cutting requirements are very light, a Vic Classic might be considered.

I'll second the nomination of the Rambler.  I have one on my keys and it's a great little tool.  The combination cap-lifter and phillips driver is a great tool.  I wish they'd make it in a larger frame size!

If your cutting needs are heavier than what a classic sized SAK will be good for, a Ladybug would be an excellent choice.  If you can afford a little bit more, look at a Jester; there are still a few places that have them, though they're pricey for what they are.  The advantage is they have a really great blade profile for fine cutting and utility tasks.  At the same time, I think Spyderco dropped the ball on the design by giving them a hollow ground blade instead of a flat grind.

If I had the money I'd go for a Jester or a ZDP Ladybug.
The first Noble Truth: life is suffering.  Only by accepting that fact can we transcend it.

I carry a vic mini champ on my keys and have for a very long time. Just love the darn little thing. Comes in quite handy often. :tu:
