Wire cutters (not) cutting thin wire.
on: April 12, 2012, 07:16:48 PM
I has a little bit of thin wire -- those used to close bags -- and I was just distracted "cutting" pieces of it with the SPIRIT. Turns out it doesn't cut the wire, but actually breaks it, because it's so thin. Now I took another MT, in this case a LT FUSE, and it made a clean cut.

I'll try to post pictures later, but has anyone come to that? Wire cutters not being able to cut thin stuff.

I've had it happen with cheapo wirecutters several times. I'm a bit surprised a Spirit having the problem, so I've learnt something new today as well.

I've found the Spirit has trouble with very thin wire and seems more comfortable with thicker stuff . Never caused me a problem though.

The spirit's wire cutters are pathetic, in my opinion.

The two spirits I have/had both have play between the two halves of plier head compare to the tight movement of LM, so they tend to move apart on very thin stuff and not cutting.

I haven't had a multi not develop this play yet. My surge does it BAD and my spirit is showing signs of it. I find stranded wires/cables the worst  It's going to happen after its put through its paces no matter what. The only exception is maybe ST300 carbide cutters but I imagine even it will eventually after enough rigorous use.

^ This. That's why "real" wire cutters pinch together instead of having a shearing action.

I don't think you can really do anything about it.

If a Leatherman works better, it is only a matter of time before it loosens up a bit and does the same thing.

Exactly my thought; bypass cutters rely on the pivot strength alone to keep them from developing play. Anvil cutters shouldn't have such issues, but are imo harder to fix if you manage to dent them...
