Scibeer builds a Woodsman
on: February 05, 2008, 06:41:45 AM
Many of you have seen discussions and pictures of knives assembled or modified by Bill Evans, known as Scibeer over at SOSAK.  Here I will share with you a well-documented knife I own that Bill has recently put together.

This knife was assembled with parts from a new Victorinox Champion, on the tailgate of a truck in a restaurant parking lot.

Here is Bill's description:

"This knife is based on the now discontinued Woodsman model which is basically an explorer with a saw which is a great set of tools. In addition to the original set of tools, this updated version includes the hook and the small screwdriver opposite the saw. We've made it a little more interesting by adding plus scales with the pin and pen, and a custom addition of pointy tweezers in the secret plus scale slot."

The assembly:

Awesome...it sounds silly, but I'm impressed with the tweezers!  I've never even thought of clipping one like that...

I'm impressed that he did all that on the tailgate of a truck!

Imagine what he could do with a whole shop at his disposal!

Heh.

Guess how many times I've actually peened something with mah peenin' hammer. (peening? peining?)

I'm most impressed with the block drilled to accept pins in whatever common combinations he uses.

It may not be apparent from the pics or the description, but the knife holds both pairs of tweezers.  The flat tweezers in the normal spot, and the sharp ones in the "secret" scale slot.

No kidding.  That knife looks and feels just like any new Victorinox I've ever bought too.  All the tools have that perfect factory snap.

Simply awesome work. IMHO the man is an artist. There's a couple of modders over at SOSAK who are unbelievable. Myself OTOH, I can't change a scale without scratching the crap out of it.  :-[

BTW, I don't own one yet, but I've handled one of Scibeer's ALOX models.  You should see how neatly he peens the external rivets.  They have a beautiful, hand-hammered look that I like better than the originals.  I have one at home (again, not mine) that I will try to post pictures of before I send it back.

I can't imagine how much practice it took to get that right on a regular basis.

Most impressive, thanks for the picture tutorial!

Question: by what means is the "secret" slot cut in the one scale?

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

If you look at the back of Vic's scales that slot is already there, molded in at the factory.  You basically just have to relieve, or cut, the outer rim of the scale to have access to it.

I wish the scales on multitools came with tweezers pen and toothpick, I suppose I always have my Swisscard Lite in my wallet if I need them.

The Swisscard Lite is a great tool to have around.  They're very easy to carry, but I find it easy to forget that I have one on me.

It isn't on all of them, but most of the new plus scales have the slot.    Open it up, and you're good to go.   Make sure you make it a tight fit or you'll be making new tweezers a lot.

You will have to shorten them a little to fit since the slot isn't as long as the normal one.

How do you know that it doesn't just take a bit more persuadin' to make a SAK?

Sometimes you just gotta make the right threats with this fine-mechanical things, set a few as examples and the rest should fall into line nice like.
