This is our most recent dog. A 1 year old poodle named Perline:

Here are some puppy photos:

When we got her

A couple of weeks later

This is my beloved Grandma holding her

And these are more recent, but before she got a hair cut:

She absolutely loves playing with the family members. Wrestling, tug-o-war or fetching balls, sticks and other objects.
She is very energetic but we like to play with her until she almost falls from exhaustion, and then we get some quiet time while she rests  >:D

A great dog, it's too bad I only get to see her on the weekends while at my parents house.

Here's a couple of shots of mine at the beach a couple of weeks ago.  In case anyone doesn't know by now, Daisy is a German Shepherd/ Rottwieller mix and Chinook is a Siberian Husky. If you still don't know which is which, well then you probably shouldn't get a dog!

Seems like both you and the dogs had a good time!  :tu:

(And if you didn't, how on Earth did you manage that with companions like that on such a day?!  :D )

If you are out with the dogs and you didn't have a good time then either something went horribly wrong (dog fight, accident etc) or it's your fault for not being able to enjoy anything!

Dogs are the best people on the planet and they are even more fun when their excess energy is being burnt off by other dogs!

My wife and I have spoken of this often.

There are some people who can't have dogs or don't have time/space for them, but still like dogs.  And, there are people who are afraid of dogs. However...

When we meet someone who says, "I don't really like dogs"

It instantly sets off alarms in my mind.  There has to be something not right about this person.  How can you not like an animal that spends most of their existence expressing how much they like you and are willing to put themselves in harms way for you, just because you're part of his/her pack?

I knew there was a reason I liked it here, and this thread has pointed out exactly why. Lots of mutts, rescued dogs, mixed breed cats and shelter cats, etc, and the purebreds are “proper dogs”.  :tu:

There are no overbred balls of fluff living their lives in constant pain on cause of some breeder's disturbed ideas of what a “dog” should look like. (Dog breeders “producing” unhealthy animals on purpose should be forbidden ever working with any kind of animals, IMNSHO.)

Just wanted to give the whole community a big  :tu:

Yep, looking through this thread, I see a lot of love, and a lot of both lucky animals and lucky people to have those animals in their lives.

And, yeah, a really high rate of shelter animals. Which I think is great. Where's the 'group hug' emoticon? :D

EDIT: when we're out driving sometimes, I'll see a dog-owner walking his dog, and point the dog out, usually saying 'look at the pretty puppy!'. My hubby's like 'You say that about every dog you see.', and I say 'Well, yeah, because it's true every time.'

Here's some examples: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2011/05/a_lesson_in_basic_genetics_for.php

My wife told me not to watch that documentary, and I followed her advice, so I can't comment specifically on the contents. What I do know is that you shouldn't watch that film without being prepared that there are some mindlessly cruel people out there...

The video in the linked page is marked as private, so i couldn't watch it. Probably better that I don't, anyway.

Now I'm going to start imagining the Sarah McLachlan ASPCA video.

I did a quick web search, and I think http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/pedigree-dogs-exposed/ is the same as I posted first. (Though I obviously don't know. :) )

I don't know if helping to find stuff like this is helpful or sadistic...

Don't know why I didn't see this thread sooner!

I'm a cat person really... much prefer cats to dogs, though I have had a couple of dogs when I was younger that I was very attached to.

Of the pets in our house, none are really "mine"...  We have a half and half poodle / bichon mix we got at the pound; he was a great find.  Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he's great with our kids, especially my 3 y.o. daughter... despite her incessant yanking on his tail and ears, (which we've had only a little luck getting her to not do), he never snaps, barks, r responds aggressively to her in any way.  He's very affectionate and both our kids love him dearly.

We also have a family cat, a fixed female who's about 7 years old now, named Scratch, for her penchant for scratching at the door to be let in or out, and inordinately large claws for a female cat.  She's a brindle / tabby mix, also a pound rescue.  She's a neurotic little bee-yotch most of the time though... and while she can be affectionate, we figure she had some attachment issues in the pound, because she doesn't like to get close to anyone very much, and she rotates through our family as to who is her favorite person.

I personally, being a physiological and cognitive psychologist, have been wanting a rat for a pet.  Two in fact... I've researched it quite a bit and have decided that I'll get two females as from what I've read they are less odorous than male rats and all mice, and tend to be more docile and affectionate than males and mice.  I'm still researching enclosures, and what I'll need to comfortably house two females, but I have already decided that, again, being a psychologist, I'm going to call them Watson and Skinner! :D

:D I'd really like rats as pets, smart and affectionate little buggers. Though, I've read the opposite from you. What I have read, slightly exaggerated, is the choice is between docile and affectionate males who pee, I mean, do scent marking, all over the place, and playful and active females who gnaw at everything. When I have seen rats in enclosures, the males were sleeping and the females came running for attention. I have never owned rats myself, but perhaps someone reading this can chime in and clarify?
