Anyone have any knowledge of cats? I've always been one for dogs, and a few years ago we adopted a cat for our dog to have a friend, but he basically didn't care,, a few months ago our dog passed and we've noticed a few things diff with our cat. We never had a cat before and know nothing of them,, he's going on 3yrs and I just weighed him, he's a whopping 15lbs.. HES BIG! Not fat, just BIG! Since our dog passed we've noticed he's become very more vocal, much more friendly too.. He was a stray and only a few months old when we got him. a friend of a friend found him in the basement of a building and just kept making sure he had food and water till they heard that we were looking for one so they brought him to us. We had to wait to get him chopped since he was so young, but we got him all taken care of with his shots and all. He's a great cat, pretty much listens, knows his boundary's, but he's not a cuddle cat, but loves to get pet. Any info would be great, like what to expect as they get older? Is it best to leave an endless open dry food, or only once a day? Thanks JR

I always had cats growing up, and the only reason we don't now is our son is really allergic to them.  Some cats LOVE to snuggle, some would rather try and tear you apart if you attempted a snuggle. :D

We always left lots of dry food and water for them at all times.  Cats, unlike dogs, usually only eat when they are hungry.

As he gets older, like anything, he'll start to slow down.  Chances are he'll also live a good long life.  My parents still have a cat that we got as a stray in I think 2000 or 2001, and he still acts like a kitten at times.  Last year they had to put down one of their other cats.  He was another stray that we brought in, around 1996.  Both were outdoor cats all their lives, and the one put down last year was a fighter too.

I love cats, and if I lived alone would probably be the crazy cat man!!

Animals find their own dynamic, even when they have different programming like cats and dogs.  Both have evolved and been bred to interact with humans in terms we understand, which had allowed some common ground for them to communicate with each other.

When one passes, the other changes in a lot of ways.  You have to remember, in your case your dog was always there for you when you were home, but he was always there for the cat.  With the dog gone the cat is missing a large portion of his life.  Part of his behavior could be him looking to fill that void by being friendlier with the purple in the house, and part of it could be him feeling like it's his duty to fill in the void left by the dog for the family.

It could also be that the cat always wanted to act like this but felt it wasn't his place.

Animals are strange like that, but they do take loss a lot greater than we expect them to.

Thanks, we have a pair of those cat feeders that look like the five gal water jugs, works great cause you can fill them and not have to worry, especially if were out for a while and having to worry about taking the dog out or find presents left cause well, he's got his own can.. JR

My wife has said a lot of that, we always looked at the dog as pretty much a family member rather then a pet, and the cat just a pet. But a since his passing, the little guy has taken a big part of our hearts!  Oh and even though the wife's fav color is purple, there's not much in the house! Lol  but thanks for the info! JR

Here is a funny story.

One day I left a chair slightly away from a table, and before you know it, my black and white Annie found herself a nice spot to stay. I didn't mind as I wasn't using the table for much other than storage at the moment.

Well it didn't take long for my gray Gracy to notice, and one day I saw her looking at her sister. A couple of days later, when I got home from work, I noticed that Annie was on the floor looking up and Gracy had taken her place. I figured they would work something out.

A couple of days passed by with Gracy looking rather smug with herself, and Annie looking bothered having lost herself a sweet spot.

Well, this is what I came home to. I guess Annie couldn't let it go much longer...and Gracy still looks relaxed, as she effectively displaced her sister from her favorite spot.

Got to love cats.

Nice little story Chako, yeah gotta love cats! Our fur ball has found himself a lice little spot, my chair! Since I have a tablet I don't use my comp to often so he jumps up under the desk and hangs out away from everyone,, but another thing he's started is sleeping with us, but he won't get on the bed till the lights are out and were supposedly asleep,, you'll feel this little tip toe, tip toe, turn around, then flop! He was a rescue cat but he's getting pretty good at trusting, speaking of him tomorrow's his bday he'll be 3! JR
