I personally, being a physiological and cognitive psychologist, have been wanting a rat for a pet.  Two in fact... I've researched it quite a bit and have decided that I'll get two females as from what I've read they are less odorous than male rats and all mice, and tend to be more docile and affectionate than males and mice.  I'm still researching enclosures, and what I'll need to comfortably house two females, but I have already decided that, again, being a psychologist, I'm going to call them Watson and Skinner! :D

:D I'd really like rats as pets, smart and affectionate little buggers. Though, I've read the opposite from you. What I have read, slightly exaggerated, is the choice is between docile and affectionate males who pee, I mean, do scent marking, all over the place, and playful and active females who gnaw at everything. When I have seen rats in enclosures, the males were sleeping and the females came running for attention. I have never owned rats myself, but perhaps someone reading this can chime in and clarify?

I had a pat rat for a while.  His name was Templeton, perfect name for a rat IMO.  :)  He was a very laid back and docile little bugger.  Aside from the scent marking, he would just chill.  e'd climb up on my shoulder and fall asleep there watching TV.  A friend had a female who was insane-gnawing, chewing, running, etc.  I much preferred my little guy.

Well I did something I was sure I wouldn't. I went down to the local shelter just for a look, and came home with a pair of 7 year old cats. They had two pairs of cats that they didn't want to split up. A younger pair around a year and a half old (new child in the house was the reason), and these older 7 year old cats (previous owner couldn't take care of them anymore). I wanted a pair as I felt guilty leaving my older cat to his own devices for half a day at a time. This way, these can keep each other company. The older ones didn't have much of a chance at adoption...so I went with those. That and in the other pair, was a cat that looked almost like my old cat.

I brought both home yesterday after going to Wal-Mart for a pair of cat carriers. One is very affectionate. She is called Annie. Her photo was easy to take this morning.

The other appears to be a Russian Blue/mix. She is shy. As soon as I brought them home, both immediately found the underside of my bed. Whilst the other came out, I couldn't get Gracie out. I then left for an hour. When I came back, Gracie wasn't under the bed...and after tearing the house apart, I couldn't find her.

Well, the friendly Annie slept with me last night. At around 2 AM, I was woken up by the loudest purring I have ever heard. Gracie graced me with her presence. Yeah, I think things will work out nicely here. No photos of here though. After waking up, she stuck around for a few minutes to get some scratching, and sauntered off upstairs to hide again.

Top job Chako!

It's really hard to find homes for older shelter animals.  I'm sure they'll reward you with years of companionship. :)

I hope so. I just managed to get a photo of the elusive Gracie. I had to dig her out from upstairs though...with a little food. Once downstairs, she seems ok though.

Don't push her too hard- give her space and let her come to you.  Just because you adopted her doesn't mean she's adopted you just yet.

And, as Nate said, good on you for taking in a pair that would have a hard time finding a home.

Big breakthrough just now. For the first time, I am now seeing both cats together. Gracie came back down, ate something, and started hanging around Annie. They both took turns eating. Looks like everything is going to be all right.  :D

To me pets are like kids ... fun in small doses ... occasionally, but I certainly wouldn't want any of my own. Good to see the little critters on show and for those who haven't met her - Miss Ruby Dog (nuphoria's) is even more adorable in real life. I don't know why, but I expected this crowd to have some more unusual pets like birds or lizards or tortoises with toothpick and tweezers

We used to have a member that bred exotic snakes for a living- does that count?

Haven't heard from him in a while though.  Great guy- I hope all is well with him.

Here is a first for me at least, and a good indication that things are going very well. This is a photo taken just moments ago while I was sitting at my computer. Both cats came down together and ate together. I have this dual dish setup that brings the bowls off the ground. I fill each dish with different food but usually one eats whilst the other waits....or is simply sleeping somewhere in the house. This however was nice to see.  :)

My wife drove to Montreal to buy us a Siberian cat.  (6 hr drive from here)  This was before we had the baby so I dont think she'd do the same now.. :D

The first pic was when we got him, and the others are him after many bags of cat food.  He's the best hunter I've ever had for a cat.  I've seen him catch flies out of the air in his paws and eat them.  He wanders around cleaning the windows of spiders and eats them too.  He's a good mouser as well, but doesn't eat those, he just corners them for me to catch.

I have a funny story to tell you. Last night, I was waken several times by the cats going wild. I turned on the lamp and saw a big moth flittering about. Now these things are hard for me to find, as they tend to hide during the day to come out only to annoy at night. In fact, I remember one last year that annoyed me for a full 2 weeks at night. I never did catch that one. I wouldn't have known about the moth except for two cats trying to capture it. After trying to ignore the cats hunting fun for 20 minutes or so, I got up and couldn't find it after being terrorized by the duo.

The next time I woke up,  I see both cats swatting a dead moth around the kitchen floor having a grand old time of it. I would hate to see how a mouse would fare with these two around.  :D

Nice cat Syph007.  :salute:

Great pics Syph :D

Chako, great to see those two settling in well... sometimes it just takes a little time :)

We had a pair of cats when I was a kid which were found abandonned in a cardboard box in an empty property. They were only a few weeks old, half starved to death, dehydrated and lying in their own faeces. We took them in and fed them up, and called them Bepo and Groucho.

The male always stayed pretty feral but could be enticed out for nuts and raisins (go figure), and the female was shy but friendly. She never quite recovered from her horrible start and ended up with an inoperable tumour, and he eventually went properly wild and ran away :(

They were hard work, but well worth the effort for the time we had with them.

A few more pictures. After having them for a week, I am starting to nail down their personalities.

Annie is the mischievous one that loves to snuggle and wake me up at night.

And Gracie is the calm quiet and stoic member of the pair. She is affectionate but likes her space a little more than Annie.

Love this picture!  Male cats and young children often do better together than dogs and children.   Our kids used to drag the cats around, holding the cat by the head and front leg.  The cats loved it (well, at least didn't seem to mind it... ;))

He looks like a great guy!
