restoring an almost dead forester blade?
on: May 05, 2012, 03:49:11 PM
Today my father asked me to sharpen his Vic Forester, the main blade was really dull and I started using my Vic sharpener only to discover that the bottom half of the blade was getting somewhat sharp but the top half all the way to the tip seemed to remain extremely dull (so that i can easily press my finger on it and dont risk of cutting myself)

He told me that the damage is probably done when he cut some herbs etc from low in the ground.

Any ideas for what can i do and what sharpening tools (easily accessible i hope) i need??

Thanks in advance!

It's really no different from any other dull blade, you just need to remove more metal.

Sandpaper should cover cheap, efficient and easily accessible. Use a hard, flat base and work down from the coarser grits. If you're careful, you could also set the edge with a diamond file.

Ya seems like any good sharpener could be used that can remove enough metal and reset the angle.  On something like a sharpmaker start with course or extra course stones and work down.  DMT diamond sharpener with an angle guide (for the non expert) would work wonderfully.

Victorinox uses a good steel just keep your angle on the sandpaper and it will sharpen up.

It's nice of you to sharpen up your dads sak good luck with it volbu.

Oh, a wharncliffe mod!

I've see blades treated worse, but those were pretty bad.
