It is almost etched? Metal polish didn't help.

Hmmm something may have been able to eat the surface because it was left on, maybe chemical from a bottle or maybe a food acid.

Try vinegar/water mixture if no one here objects to that... that is don't go try it right away, wait for more answers.

the bottle opener of my 09 soldier is stained with car battery acid, and it looks very similar but the stain is less aggressive

I was thinking it was likely acid as well.  Not sure I have an answer for getting rid of it though. :-\

I don't have much to offer other than ... it wasn't me  :-[

If it has gotten a patina, it will take some polishing out but won't have done any real harm to the blade

It might have been heated then polished   I had one do that when it was heated. They won't polish out as the carbon has changed. Let's hope it's not that.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I got some battery acid on a bottle opener on a Climber, and it looked very similar to that.  I have yet to find a way to remove the stain.  I also got some naval jelly on a SAK blade with similar staining, but a dremel and some car polish removed almost all of it.
