What do you look for in...

A custom knife ???

What steel would you be looking at having the knife made from, natural fibres or man made stuff, for the grips and sheath ???

Would it be plain and functional, or have lot's of little embelishment's ???

Guard or no guard ???

saw back or serrated, double or single edged ???

Classically designed or ultra modern  ???

What would your idea of a custom knife look like ???

That is a pretty knife.

Actually, if you are talking fixed blade utility knives, I like the Nessmuk knife.

After my first "bad" experience with a full custom, I think first and foremost I'd look for a maker with a good name/reputation.
next would be the steel, 5160, 154CM, INFI, D2; so many good ones but it's really the heat treat that makes it special, so
other buyers experience would really be favorable.

Though popular I'm not one for clip points, give me spear point or drop point, even sheeps foot work for me.
I like full flat grinds because their easy to maintain and good for slicing and a general use edge.
Natural scales are beautiful but I'm more of a user so man-made materials is the way I'd go.

I haven't purchased a custom knife yet but I have done some shopping around.

I want something that is way ahead of the mainstream in design and ergonomics. I under the reasoning behind buying a classic pattern built by a custom maker and it's not for me. If I were to go through to trouble to have a custom knife made I want it to look like it fell out of the sky from a hundred years in the future. Not chintzy and cheap looking, just advanced aesthetics that most makers don't venture into.

I was looking heavily at several designs from the knifemaker above but just don't have the capital to start a new collection right now, maybe after I get a real job.

It certainly does, but would you? I feel that If I paid that much for a field piece I would be too afraid to use it on anything, and It would just sit there.

No, I dont have the Nessmuk knife yet.  I have been looking into ordering one soon.  However, I might have to get one of those skeletools first.  I havent bought a fixed blade in almost 2 years, so I am about due to get one soon.
