I believe many of the firearm manufacturers simply sold their naming right for knives/flashlight to third party, so the actual manufacturers has nothing to do with them.

Colt Knives are manufactured by United Cutlery, so no, really not any good.  They're made in China - for the same price, you can get a Byrd or a clearance Benchmade Redline and have a far, far superior knife.

Rule of thumb - if any company markets their blades as "440 Stainless" without even denoting what version of 440 they use, you can pretty much assume it's garbage.

Colt also used to /maybe still does rebadge the Eichorn knives from Gewrmany . Eichorn is a very credible manufacturer of Bayonets and rescue knives .

Beretta also had their own line back in the 1990's. Some had kraton grips, partially serrated blades, with a 9mm bullet on the handle that one actually pressed to release the lock and manually close the blade.. They also had a line of zytel handled blades in which the actual blade was skeletonized which made it kinda iffy in the blade strengh department.. I still have a few of these in their original boxes and all..

Cheers,
Serge

Fair enough, but the Colt knife linked was definitely NOT an Eichorn.

First I need to say that the Colt Brand of knives was once licensed to United Cutlery, they lost that license when they went under. The new United Cutlery has no association with the Colt Brand Knives now. That said, when United Cutlery did have the license they had the knives made many places by several different manufacturers. Some were made in China, some in Taiwan, some in Germany (Eickhorn), and some here in the States (Arrowhead). I own many of these, most of German manufacture, and they are all very good knives.

The License for Colt knives is now held by Smoky Mountain Knifeworks, so far they are all made overseas in China. The slipjoint line is being made by the same company that makes the Rough Rider line for SMKW's........and they use "440 Stainless" and are far from garbage.

A understanding of the manufacturer and it's source will give better information than just assuming, or using a "rule of thumb", that just because it says only "440 Stainless" it's crappy. The manufacturer of these knives, at least the slippies, uses 440A stainless with a good heat treat. Something their RR line can atest to, it's the same steel and same manufacture. I can't speak for their newest "Tactical" series of folders as I don't own any.

The slippie can be good bangs for the buck but as with all knives some slip thru that shouldn't.

On what planet are United Cutlery considered great?

They use softened monkey poo instead of metal in most of their designs, and I believe most are just to hang on your wall or for kids to buy to scare their mothers.

Maybe the typo was intentional?  Knives meant for a storm runoff grate because they're so bad?

If I had a choice between Rough Rider, Colt, or Frost Cutlery, I'd choose RR or Frost any day over Colt. :/

Colt and RR (and indian head and some buck and...) slipjoints are made by the same people, from what I know. New schrade and some frost products are much worst.

Colt tend to be higher end, based on the examples I have.

Here are some pictures of:
A Colt with its Twin RR
A Colt with a case
Three colts.

Between RR, Colt, and Frost I'd go RR, colt, or nothing. Frost never! Horrible, horrible junk!

I'm pretty sure the OP was talking about the locking folding knives, not the slipjoints.
