I almost went for the ubiquitous LM Wave, but that tool's 5-point rivets (what's LM got against torx heads anyway??   ???) and dinky scissors  ::) are deal killers for me. The Flik's Fiscars are veritable aviation snips by comparison.

 :multi:

Leatherman only used the security torx (5 star) screws for about a year and have used normal torx screws for well over a year now. If you see 5 star LMs they have to be old stock. I thought the LM fans would have told you that by now.

I'm pretty sure five star is not torx. Security torx is same as regular with 6 point, but with a bump in the center prevent normal torx bit from reaching in. The wave I have use security torx, not regular.

I have considered sending it to them, but I did already have it substituded once and well I guess it just isnt worth the time.

Aww man, if I live close I'd go pick it up from you and send it in. That thing sells for $60 up here.  :(

Wave is $100.

There's a discount shop sells these things cheaper, but still more expensive than in the states. And the store is an hour drive away, so by the time I figure in the gas burnt getting there and back it's no longer cheap.

The 5 star was made especially for LM and others on here had a heck of a job to get the few they did manage to get. They were only supposed to be sold to registered dealers. The outcry of making a tool that could not be serviced by the owner got LM to reverse the decision but 6 star secure torx bits can be picked up cheaply anywhere.

If you have only had it a week, can't you take it back to the store and get a refund ?
That's what I would do.

He should still be able to get a refund, although perhaps the consumer law is different in the USA.
Personally I wouldn't have accepted a replacement and asked for my cash back.

Many stores in the USA will allow for only for exchange  instead of a refund anymore.

I probably would have done what you say, but there have been times when I've been so utterly disgusted with something that I can't be bothered to go to the effort of returning it either.  A $17 tool isn't worth several trips back to the store.

That's surprising  :o  I always thought the USA is usually better with the consumer law and rights stuff than us  ???

In the UK if the tool failed while in normal use after such a short time, he's legally entitled to his cash back, or a replacement, but it would be his choice.

Now i'm not saying it always goes smoothly, sometimes you have to be pretty determined and make sure they know you won't accept a replacement or credit note, but most times they know you have them over a barrow legal wise, and cough up the cash right away.

OK here it is. Def is actually right. This was the second suspension. The first was returned because the pivot broke. The second was because the knife side pivot broke. The way I figure it is I just really got fed up with it and I really dont want the Gerber company the satisfaction of having another leave the store. It kinda is the store that eats the sale and not the Gerber company. Remember the stores would go broke sending def. merchandise back.

To cover the cost of returns electric heating and things like shop lifting it is the customer who pays as the overheads for a store go up. So you already paid for them to return it. If enough get sent back, so that the shop owners start griping it is then when recalls/redesigns/ and asses start getting kicked.
