Canal Street Cutlery?
on: August 10, 2012, 06:02:23 PM
I ordered a Canal street cutlery "Cannitler" a few weeks ago.  I ordered it from knivesshipfree.com for like $93 (a great place to order, great prices and free fast shipping).  It arrived within three days.  Once again, great!

Opened the box and took out the knife.  It looks amazingbut that was about it.  What a piece of crappy workmanship whoever completed it must have been high or in a state of drunkeness.  The small blades were horribly loose.  Hell, the spey blade was so loose when closed that it swings halfway open.  Anyway, has anyone else had a problem with Canal Street Cutlery knives?  I called, e-mailed, and sent it back immediately for repair.  I'll keep posting the progress and if it returned repaired or in the same sorry state it left in.

I've heard that there are sometimes some f&f issues with CsC, although when you get a good one it is really great. I've also heard that they are good at looking after the customers. You may have to go through a few before you get one with f&f that is good enough. that is a real PITA, but for some reason it happens a lot with traditional slip joints, I wonder why it is that a swiss watch with all its tiny moving parts can be perfect every time, yet knife making companies cannot even get the liners and springs flush much of the time.

Like I said, it is a beautiful knife.  The "cosmetic" appearance was great.  The actual fit and finish that makes it what it is (a folding knife) sucked.

My issue with it was the price.  I willingly paid that price which is double that of a Case folder of comparable design because it had better steel, and should be a better more precise product.  I understand that because it is a folder it has moving parts and therefore a certain amount of non-precision can be expected.  However, I have a bunch of Case folders, they are all mass produced for the most part.  They have some flaws but by and large none of them had the problems like my CSC.  I have an orange g-10 Case golf trapper.  I have played literally hundreds of rounds of golf digging into dirt and sand with the divot tool.  Yet through all the times I've gound it with grit in the springs, it has developed very little play.

I still have not heard anything back yet.

Hopefully it shall return next week.

Yes, I will keep yall posted.

I have a CS Cannitler, and everything on it is first rate, except that the grinds are not exactly perfect.  There is nothing wrong with the grinds, but they just look like they are done by hand and there is some variance there.  You can see the slight waviness of this grind, which should be straight.

(Image removed from quote.)

The whole "done by hand" thing is why I bought a CS in the first place.  I thought that their craftsmanship, blade steel, fit and finish was supposed to be first rate. I just might have got a "dud."  Aspects like a small smudge on the main blade add character to it much like the scratches on a favorite rifle or shotgun but the massive blade play was just too much for me to stand.  This was the first time that I honestly can say I was "disappointed" with a purchase, like I did not get what I paid for.

Another interesting aspect was that if you held the knife up to a light source so that you were looking at the backspring, you could see light shining through the gaps between the springs, like the pins holding the springs in place were cut and ground to an improper length.  If anything that would have explained the horizontal blade play.  The vertical/front,back blade play was no doubt an improper length spring.

Like I said, I hope that it returns in much better shape than it left.  I'm certain that it will.

I own two CsC knives, both trappers, not cannitlers. The f&f was excellent on my examples. I'm very sorry to hear of your experience. They WILL make it right. I have faith.
1 suggestion: While I have no experience with your online retailer, for CsC products I only use droppointhunter. While independent they really are THE factory online catalog for Canal Street. Their stock comes straight from the factory floor and they often are the sole source for limited runs as well. They have always treated me very well.

I am looking forward to hearing how it works out.
