Easy way for engraving alox models ?
on: May 16, 2012, 09:03:38 PM
Hello all,
As I was working with my harvester I thought why dont I engrave my name on it in case I drop it or something, but I do not want to pay serious money for that.
Anyone has any easy diy solution for engraving ??

Would really love it!

I suspect some kind of etching will be easier. I'm all thumbs so I have no constructive input, though.

If it's just for ID purposes and you're SURE you won't want to sell it one day, buy an electric engraver. They're something like $25. They have a super-hard, pointed tip that vibrates and the length of stroke of the vibration can be adjusted with a dial.

It is very hard to get a professional looking result freehand though. I've never been able to do it.

If you buy the engraver, you won't save any money now, but if you engrave lots of stuff, it might be worth it. For example, my brother engraved all his tools with it.

You could try a plastic letter stencil and a metal scribe,
I'm not sure how good it would look on Alox
Everything’s adjustable

My father also has that tool and he also use it to engraveredd his tools,
Alox is a soft metal, so with this tool will be easy to engraver, but will depent on your hand how nice will be, you should practice before engraver your alox.
I will try with SAK my classic alox.

There are stores in malls here that will engrave for you with a machine, probably you have something similar near you?

I was able to use a metal stamp set since the metal was soft and a few light taps per letter to get a decent id on one of mine.

Alox is fairly soft. Perhaps you could ask a local jeweler to do it for you...
