Wenger Toolchest: Thoughts?
on: May 25, 2012, 07:19:45 PM
Amici,
This question especially goes out to all you fellow Wenger fans. What are your experiences or impressions using or handling the Wenger Toolchest, the I will call "evil twin" of the Swisschamp?

Although I owned one many moons ago, I never really used it in an EDC role.

I'm not sure if it was ever a big go getter like the Swisschamp, for if it was, I am sure that it would have been "evo'd" in some form by now.

Cheers,
Serge

Wenger's (locking) Tool Chest Plus (Supertalent 54, and EVO-ized) is just too fat:  the compass takes up three spaces - but does provide a storage tray for match and needle.  The only two back-side tools is another reason to call it the "evil twin" of Victorinox's SwissChamp.  Weighs more too: 7.7 oz to 6.7 oz.  So honestly I have little actual experience with it, preferring the Vic for a backpacking EDC.

I have an original tool chest I believe, but mine does not have the car logo. I think the magnifier is a waste of space. It's potentially useful, and so is the small driver on the end, but I can't for the life of me see why they mounted it on that honking great length of steel  The whole tool is a bit on the fat side too, for me anyway. OK for bag carry, but not one for the pocket IMO.

I actually did a review of it HERE ... but I thought it was a Motorist at the time

While I like the Wenger ToolChest I would not EDC it. I would rather carry my SwissChamp or SwissChamp XLT. The tools that Wenger offers beyond the Victorinox offerings like the Universal Wrench and the Ruler/Compass are not items I would be in need of in most EDC situations.

I have always been dumbfounded by Wenger's lack of backside mounted tools. Surely if Victorinox could come up with the chisel, fine screwdriver, hook and the Plus Scales you think Wenger would follow suit in some instances.

I think the compass had to go.
