Hi Metro, is that grip/skateboard tape on the lock release tab?
Looks to be an effective addition.  :tu:

That is indeed skateboard tape. It is not so much for the lock release, its more to aid my pinch grip so I can extract it from my sheath easier. The jimping/ridges on the release do great for its actual purpose.

I put the Black Tide 'fat' side down so the flat portions of the lock release are where my fingers natural go to get it.

Well I decided to give it a go myself on my Charge AL(used to be an X).

I use the leather sheath and keep it skinny side down so I put the grip tape on the fat end.

When I use the pocket clip its quite a tight fit but now with the addition of the grip tape extraction of the tool is much easier.

Provides nice traction when using both knife blades, thumb on one side, index finger on the other.

Cheers for the top tip Eric. Looking forward to seeing what you have instore for the Black Tide next.

I often thought about adding a bit of tape on those parts too, BUT I ride the Black Tide up against my Black Space Pen, in no time I am sure it'll show brass in MUCH shorter time than it already has.

I like that it's super cheap and effective :)

I wish they had continued that jimping all the way up the release button so these kinds of 'fixes' don't have to be discovered by us.

That's why I carry mine the same way as Metro; not only are the lock tabs easier to grab hold of, but I also leave the clip outside the body of the sheath; that way the tool is always in the same orientation, so the OHO blades are always where I expect them to be, and the clip doesn't make the tool any harder to draw.

The Black Tide SCISSORS!
Reply #65 on: July 27, 2012, 10:10:12 PM
Finally had a bit of downtime between work and the new house and I got to add scissors to replace the saw on The Black Tide.

Extracting the fantastic scissors from my BO Flik (Fiskar designed), I had to figure out how to pin and lock the back spring in place. Having done something similar to my Surge Scissor/MUT mod, these were substantially easier than that project.

The Flik scissors are meant to fold down the other way, so instead of being under constant tension, the back spring can rest when the scissors are folded away.

In this photo you can see where I added a little stop pin by drilling through the spot where it matches up with the little recess in the back spring. Thanks to a carbide 1/16" bit, it wasn't too hard.

A small nail was pressed into place and peened into place on the back.

On the handle side of the scissor is a little aluminum block that is used to push the scissors out from the slot on the Flik. This prevented the scissors from folding all the way into the Black Tide's body, so off it came.

A quick fit and it looks like it was supposed to be there!

Now came the problem that I come to a great, easy solution for. The scissors are a little thinner than most of the Black Tide's blades, so the handle would go into the slot too far, making deployment a little tough. A couple of plastic spacer wedged and superglued together pushes the scissors out enough so that the little nub sticks out enough to grab it easily.

The existing crescent cut out for the saw nub is now home to the handle for the scissors.

The scissors deployed, the back stop goes a little further than the LM saw but it still stops. It's not important since I pushed the liner lock into the handle really far and it is now flush with the slot surface, it doesn't interfere with the scissors at all now.

Since scissor's backspring is now pinned and is complete as a unit, the liner lock and back stop isn't critical.

and folded:

nesting time!:

and now something you'll really enjoy...

I believe this is it, The Black Tide has been my faithful EDC tool for some time now and I have seen its power to be great. With the addition of scissors, it's power is even greater..much greater.

It's only rival is the Blue Nose...

Sorry if you had said this in the post but is that a rebar's awl, and if so how did you make then fit? I am planning on making my charge have outside scissors, and was planning on putting an awl where the old scissors would be. Would that work, or will I have to make my own awl?

You have to grind down the cutting edge a bit so that it sits lower into the handle, otherwise it jams on the Pliers a bit.

*UPDATE*

Pulling the ole switcheroo!

I was toying with the idea of switching the blades so I could have a left OHO SE blade, right OHO PE blade. I went ahead, which also means having the file on the OHO slot.

A slow, careful regrind of the locking surfaces and boom!

No more mistaking the blades now! Bonus is that the overall profile is slimmer.

Hey I see the awl in the tide. Did you have to modify anything for it to fit?

For the wave the cutting edge needed to be ground down a bit. Also the overall thickness of the bit driver needed to be reduced by .5mm to make it fit.

The Black Tide Grip Plates!
Reply #74 on: December 20, 2012, 04:31:52 PM
Originally I had ordered these grip plates for the Commander project but I also ordered a set of black for the Black Tide.

The thinner plate is a shaved down version of the T&T plate that didn't work out. These are doubled sided tapped on for now to see if these are good or need to be redesigned.

So far I love the extra grip, mild jimping and added visual fullness on the once empty side panels.

Because I shave down one of the plates, there is a small gap between them when the handles are out. Perfect. I know I need to thin out the over all dimension to make them fit in the MKII.

Great grip!!

No, it's thinner. The VHB is too thick. This stuff was used to stick signs up, can't argue with that.

Great thread. Thanks for sharing. I went ahead and modded my Wave with the Rebar plier head. Alittle tricky being my first multi tool mod but it worked out great. I took out the scissors and  modded the large flathead screwdriver bit from the Rebar. Shorten and tapered it. I moved the eyeglass screwdriver bit to where the scissors were and put the modded bit where the eyeglass screwdriver bit was in the handle. I may make the modded bit an awl.
