What's this knife/tool for?
on: May 26, 2012, 10:55:13 PM
A few of knifes Francis has been posting lately have reminded me of a game we played on a different forum a few years ago. It was very fun and educational and it would be interesting to see what we could dig up. Please re-host the pics and rename them so people can't simply look up the pics name. You can credit the pic source later.

OK, I'll go first. This should be an easy one. :D

OK since it's the first one. I was actually going for what specific leatherworker. It was used in the process of making shoes the most. Here it is hanging around with a few of his friends.

Only a 5-in-1?  No hammer end?  No bit driver?  No wrench cutouts?   Working in a paint store, I sell several of those a day.  That pictured one is a simple one, they get fancier than that as well.  I figure we carry at least 10 different variations of that tool.  Hyde makes a great painters tool, even the lower-end ones are quality.  For those who don't know, that tool is a scraper, drywall/plaster crack opener, putty knife, paint can opener, and paint roller cleaner all in one.

I have a few of those Hyde tools, both the simple flat putty knife and the painters tool.  Awesome tools and CHEAP!

From The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual.   I like the leather background.
The left three are Wenger, the others Victorinox.
Handles of black fiber, red fiber, horn, bakelite?, black celluloid, wood.

Melon cutter/tester knife; the one with the fork and spook is a Melon Hobo, I'd imagine.

Now for something that came up in another thread. These are three very similar knives in appearance, but have very different specific uses. As this was discussed just a day ago in the swiss sub-forum, it isn't part of the quiz, but I thought it would be nice to include such examples in this thread too.

First is a ink eraser knife. It was used before White out correction fluid to correct/scratch out errors.

Next is a Cardboard knife, as the name says, for cutting cardboard.

And the last, a Striking knife, used in carpentry for markings.

These two knives look totally different, but share the same name and use. Can anyone guess what they are called?

Top one looks like the ones butchers use to cut meat in smaller pieces. Bottom looks like the ones butchers use to remove skin from meat.

Yes, they are used by butchers, but which butchers? There is a special ritual involved with this knives.
