Thing that is a shame is how today people shy away from the outdoors. I actually used to get in trouble if I did not have a pocket knife and a book of matches on me.

Myself my brother and cousins all would spend most every night even the school ones camping in our yards. We would actually follow the receding snow line further from the home.

At the age of about 12 we were trusted to walk by ourselves 1 mile through the woods to get to the shooting area our dads all set up and spend hours plinking away with our .22 and we never shot ourselves.

Unfortunatly times are changing and I really would hate to be a kid today.
I know it is sad times, they really are :(

I know and my new kiddo actually told her Kindergarden teacher I build rifles in the basement. She called the cops.

This incident unfortunately reminds me of Communist Russia, the old East Germany, or the even the Third Reich, where children were encouraged by teachers to rat out their parents.  Apparently many children did inform on their parents, which resulted in them being sent off to the gulags for 're-education.'

nah Keep it locked up at work. It is really the only place in Mass that I really know what the area is like. My company has 154 acres and we have the Assebett river behind that with 300 acres of military land after that so it is a safe place to play.

Have you taught your kid how to make charcloth yet?

Nah hes only just turned 5, so a lot of that stuff has to wait a bit, but he does come down the woods with me quite a bit, and he's a fit little sod as a result (certainly knackers me out :D)

I actually have a couple of traditional flint and steel kits I keep in Altoids tins.  Starting a fire with traditional flint and steel actually is pretty easy.  You do have to keep char cloth in your tinder box.  It works easy if you put your char cloth on the flint and not try to place it down and put sparks to it that way.

I love that half-penny, Benner. That's a beauty. You can't give anymore character into a lighter than that. Sweet! (we need a thumb's-up icon!)

It certainly has character.  :)  It was surprisingly cheap as well.

You see many like it on ebay, but not as unique as this one.  Most are clearly mass made as well.
I'm back!!
