Out of curiosity I have just tried and the wooden handled ones are all small enough to fit in a tobacco tin  :)

Yes it is ply Gareth,  :tu:
They  are all made of offcuts and bits I have rescued from skips etc
The ply is a good quality bit made with a lot of thin layers (I'm sure there is a proper name for this? maybe furniture ply?)

Amici,
For me two words, "Fire Piston".. Along with some chaga, punky wood, or charcloth, plus a few rubs from a military surplus grease pot for the M1 rifle for lube around the o ring, I can always get a fire going and on the first tap..

Cheers,
Serge

Got a new one the other day from Sugar Creek Knifeworks...

A Colonial Spanish/Mexican style Coffin-shaped "Chispa" flint striker. The edges are ground very crisp so that one side can be reserved for scraping a firesteel or tinder.

Just got this in...a Copper Tinderbox from Stump Bluff Trading Company. It has a candle socket on the underside of the lid and a snuffer plate.

My version of the candlebox/tinder tin. I used a 16ga shotshell base as a socket and made it reversible for transport.
