"Muscle" Knives
on: June 02, 2012, 04:30:52 AM
When the term "Muscle Car" comes up, most everyone can name one.  Whether it be a Mustang, Camaro, Corvette or what have you, they are classics and a class by themselves.

What 2 knives would you put in the "Muscle" category?

Fixed - Western W49 Bowie - 9 inch blade, double guard, high carbon steel

Folding - Buck 110 - 'Nuff Said

I'd have to go with the original Spyderco Manix on the folder side, that thing is a beast.

Boring to repeat already mentioned knives, as my first thought for fixed blade was kukri as well. So, how about a Haakonsen leuku for the fixed blade. Harder to think of a good alternative folder... Hm, they're not my cup of tea, but I do think something like a Strider would qualify.

For a fixed blade, two candidates - USMC Ka-Bar or the Buck 119.  Two big sheath knives that are tough as nails.  As for folders, the Buck 110 immediately comes to mind.  Another is the Kershaw Needs Work.  Nice big Wharncliffe blade, takes and keeps a great edge.  In fact, I have one clipped to my pocket right now!

Well the fixed blade that comes to mind for me is the Randall #1. Not a giant but famous for it's time. As far as a folder goes, since the buck 110 has been taken, I will say the large case rosewood hunter.  :D

Cold Steel Spartan or GEC 23 (needs muscles to open...)

Fixed blade, possibly the Downunder Outback; huge brute, not practical, great fun to play with, looks sexy as f....

For a fixed blade I'd say the Chris Reeve Aviator.

For a folder I'd have to say the Cold Steel Voyager series.

For a multi I'd say the Spirit embodies the muscle car in every way, except for the non US made end of it. It's sleek, sexy and powerful, and looks just as good at rest as it is in use.

Not only does it have muscle, the action is smooth as glass.

That, and it doesn't rust away like a Leatherman old Mustang or Charger........

My muscle fixed blades are:

J Adams MOD Survival Knife
Chris Caine Survival Tool (Black Fluorolon "Military" Version)
Scorpion Knives Warthog
Leuku (Maker unknown)
and just to push the boundaries I'll sneak in the Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel

Muscle Folders? I'll have to pass on that. Seems too much like a contradiction in terms to me

Forgot to add ... Muela Jabali 17A

I appreciate that other than those who had chance to fiddle and fondle at the meet, these knives might not mean a lot to most folk here. Time for some trademark crap piccies then I suppose :D

The knives in question:

Anton De Plessis Warthog by Scorpion Knives:

Muela Jabali 17A:

Leuku:

J Adams MOD Survival Knife:

All are carbon steel with the exception of the Muela, which despite being stainless and therefore many of us would be concerned about impact work, held up very well to some good heavy log and branch thrashing and retained the edge very well too. All of these have proved (to me at least) to be the kind of tool which will do whatever I needed to be it log bashing, or much finer work. The only one I would have some reservations on would be the Leuku - it's far less of a "thumper" than the others. I think if I was going to carry just ONE of these into a potential SHTF scenario, it would probably be the Warthog. Absolutely SUPERB bit of kit

I really didn't think there needed to be "Muscle" multi list. . . Much like The Highlander, there can be only one. . .

The Original SwissTool.

For me, the Buck 119 also came immediately to mind... I got one way back when I was in high school, and first getting interested in outdoors activities.  It was my first "real" knife.

For a folder, the first one that came to mind for me was the Spyderco Superleaf... their blades are 4 mm thick... :o  massive for a folding knife.  It was at the top of my list for a big bruiser of a folder, until the Manix 2 XL came out.
The first Noble Truth: life is suffering.  Only by accepting that fact can we transcend it.

the MOD knife came to my mind as well, seriously tank-like build.

Kukri for fixed  ;)

The OP's analogy was with muscle cars. That's more like a Mack truck!
