It's official- the Octane is in my vest now.  I'll report back after some time, bad weather and dirty jobs are behind it and we'll compare it.to the Wingman.

This is going to be a really interesting test of corrosion resistance.  You're like Mikey in the Life cereal commercial - "Give it Grant, he'll rust anything."   :D

Hopefully, it will survive the harsh Canadian elements better than the Wingman did.

It'll be interesting to see how the Octane holds up.  I love mine, carry it all the time paired with my Compact.

I never go anywhere without my Compact, and I've always been a fan of the Octane.

Octane is pretty close in terms of size and tools, even has a pocket clip, though lacks the scissors.  Not sure it is going to be any more rust resistant though.
well I did think the Octane might be a good alternative and I know you've been a fan Grant.  I'm still not sure it'll be any more rust resistant than the wingman but a practical test is always going to be better than simple supposition. :tu:

I'm not sure what to expect really. I think that we will see some rust develop on the Octane but I'm more curious to see if the rust is as debilitating as it is on the Wingman.

I've been carrying the CRKT Tool for the last few months and it's holding up nicely.  Its been soaked a number of times.  Here's a photo of it I took a week or so ago.

That looks like a neat tool to have, especially paired with a nice SAK.

I'd really like to see how the Wave holds up on the docks. Just to see if substandard steel is one of the ways they saved money on the Wingman.

Any chance you could carry one for awhile boss? If you need a sacrificial Wave just PM me and I'll mail one right up to you. :salute:

No problem, just move to the North Atlantic, get an outdoor job on the docks, and it will be in the mail :tu:

Actually, I only have one Wave, and it's an original.  It also belonged to my good friend Dave Bowen, and I promised I would keep it in good shape for him as it does have some personal significance to him.

I'll keep the CRKT Tool going for a bit longer as I do like to get some significant use out of them before writing a review, but when I've done that I'll give a Wave a shot.

I am suprised about the Leatherman...I will say this and I wish I had taken Pics..It took quite a bite to get some rust on my SwissTool..I literally used it hard and put it away wet while re wiring a Plug on the side of the road when my trailer lights went out in a rainstorm..then a few weeks in my Jack Pack..and even then the grease and crud that normally accomapnies Semi Trailers was more of an issue than the Rust..Maybe Leatherman is using cheaper materials or finish on the Wingman..Never had a prolem with my Wave or Supertools..

A couple months after I got my Wave, it developed rust. It wasn't alot, but it was little specks of rust spread out over the entire tool. It was the height of summer and hot and pretty humid, plus I have sweaty hands. The tool was getting a fair amount of use, too. Anyways, I took the green scratch pad to it with some soap and water, then coated it in WD40. No rust since then, that has been a year ago, now.

I think Leatherman just uses a metal it feels allows them to keep their tools more affordable than a Swisstool or SOG. The WM/SK metal seems to be lower quality than the other Leatherman's I have experience with, but the tools are even less expensive.

I have had a Skeletool for a few months now, and it has not developed any rust at all so far. I have had a Wingman since January that has not developed any rust at all so far.

Since I just linked to this thread in another thread I figured it might as well be today's Official Dirty Dozen Thread Necro.  It's a good thread for everyone to be aware of whenever we get into the Rusty Leatherman discussion.

I never did get a newer Wave.  I still only have the original, and I'm not going to ruin that one.  It is valuable to a good friend, and therefore valuable to me.  :D

I also haven't done that job in a couple of years, since I left it after getting hurt.

Don't know if it is still relevant, but what I always do when I come home on a friday after a whole week of putting my leatherman to heavy use, both indoor and outdoors, is to give it an over night bath in WD40....sometimes I even leave it all weekend soaking in WD40, then the night before I go back to work, I get it out of the WD40 bath and wipe it down and oil it back up with 3-in-1 oil.

Been doing this for the last 3 years, never had a problem with rust, even after it has been with me out on the ocean fishing or hiking / camping all weekend as well.

That works for me at least.
Kind regards,

MMR

*What MMR said!

I skip a step and have converted to the new 3-1 drying silicone oil. I use a paint brush to wipe the tool down in a thick coat and leave it out on the table over night. The oil dries to a non-slime film that prohibits rust. I have had a pinchy in my back pocket for months without rust, because of the silicone oil treatment. I had a Wingman in my pocket for six months last year (through 98f temps and 100% humidity) and had no rust. My Spirit had rust forming on the pliers and sharpened edges as well. One silicone oil treatment and it stopped. I do this to all of my MTs. The oil dries and doesn't attract dirt/dust like non-drying oils do.

Seems a bit silly for a tool to require nightly application of an oil coating.  :P

I do the silicone DRYING oil treatment once every 6-8 weeks, depending on the weather. No oily metal and no rust.  :tu:

I live in a pretty dry environment now, at least in the summer, but in winter it's snowy and rainy.  I hardly EVER clean my Rebar.  Even after dropping it in the snow while working on my snowblower, I just dried it off with a paper towel and put it back in it's leather sheath.  I think I might have cleaned it once or twice in the last 2 years.

Given I live in Scotland (obviously known for it's aridly dry atmosphere ::)) I'm pleasantly surprised by the fact I've never had a rusting issue with any of my LMs.  Nor do I take any preventative measures other than wiping them dry when they get wet.  Mind you, I don't normally spend any time near salt water either.
