We always use it in both the Jeep (auto) and Jetta (standard).  We also always leave the car in gear when parking.

Both my car and my gf's are manuals, and the whole pull handbreak/turn engine off/stick in first (or reverse) gear/slight turn of wheel to engage lock are totally automatic for me... :)

I only leave it in gear on a hill, and usually go for third - don't know why

I thought it's generally the lowest gear, that could be 1st or reverse depends on your transmission.

I use hand brake if parked on incline, although if I drive an auto I only use it if it's steep enough that I feel the transmission if being stressed.

The lower the ratio, the harder it is for the car to start moving on it's own. That's why when you push start a car you put it in 2nd or third, as sticking it in first and taking your foot off the clutch will result in heavy engine braking, the car failing to start and the guy pushing you bashing his nose off the back of your car.

1st or reverse is best.

No, but I was tempted.  You see, I need some minor body work done on the Jeep and one of my fenders needs to be replaced, so I am strongly tempted to stop trying to compensate for the stupidity of others and let their insurance fix my Jeep.... or better still, buy me a new one.

Religiously use it on our manual & auto cars. + I hate the feeling of the load on the parking pin when the handbrake has not taken the load on our auto car, when the car is on a slope & you have to monster the car out of Park.

I remember the old Chrysler my folks had, I think the handbrake was located between the drivers seat & the drivers door. Mum was constantly forgetting to release it & we would tell her 'mum the car's smells again' (burning brake liners do have a unique smell ::) :D)

Having only ever owned manual cars I always use the handbrake when parked and when stationary in traffic.

Only time I leave it sat in gear is when parked on an incline.  I then put something over the gear knob to remind me of that fact before I start the engine next :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Quite a few times I'm tempted to do that too, except in the damn place I live the other guy would gets off scot free, while I get stuck with repair bill and insurance hike.  ::)

always have always will use the e-break. Leaving the car/truck in gear always leaves a chance w/o e brake of the gear slipping out. Keep it safe. leave injury to cuts playing with your MT's.

Here is a little tip, when your brakes are really wet and you are going to park your car for a long time let the brake dry for a while before using the handbrake.

I put it in 1st and release the clutch to the bite point but not entirely, then release the normal brake... then the car doesn't roll back... accelerate and release clutch slowly to continue uphill... but then again, I haven't been driving long... and yes it probably causes wear on the clutch... isn't that what it's for?

I use mine(I do have a manual transmission)..I place the car in gear as well either in first or reverse depending on where the least amount of damge could occur if for some reason I started the car up in gear.I will also use reverse if I am parked on an incline

the proper way is to apply the handbrake put the car in neutral and take both feet of the pedals

On certain hills at certain times I might use the handbrake when doing a hill start.  I taught my kids that way first.  It's the safest for beginners and the safest if I'm in a car that I'm not as familiar with.  Most of the time, even on a steep hill, if I'm used to the car, I don't even think about it, just release the clutch and hit the gas about the same time and go no hand braking needed.

We are taught to, but I don't use it either.  Not unless it's a seriously steep hill.

Same here. I don't think about it, I just put it in gear and go.

Actually this thread has got me using the handbrake more than before. I used to use it all the time, but as time passed I started neglecting to do so. Just like turning on all 4 blinkers when driving in reverse.  ::)

If my car wasn't fuel injected then I'm sure I would use the hand brake on a hill start- I think you'd have to.  But, with modern fuel injected engines you just have to release the clutch slowly until it bites in and let that keep you from rolling back until you release the brake and press the accelerator.
