Spyderco Multi Tools

Spyderco :tu: is one of my top three folding knife companies.  That being said I do not care for my two Spyderco Multi Tools.  Anyone really dig these two?

Spyderco SpydeRench T01PS, KG, 7.92oz, 2.5" Blade,
   Knife, AUS-8, Taiwan
   Tool Set, 5-pc
   Black Nylon Case

Spyderco Byrd Harp 8TOOL, BY13, 4.625oz, China
   Leather Carrying Case

I have both of them as well as the Byrd version of the SpydeRench.  They are quirky and interesting but I feel they are a bit lacking when it comes to actual function.  We do have at least one member who carries a SpydeRench on a regular basis.

Personally I hate how the pliers keep coming apart, and how you have to take half the tool apart to get at the screwdriver bits.  I do like the versatility of it being able to extend out for more leverage and that it comes apart so you can use the adjustable wrench and screwdriver at the same time.  Like most tools it's a compromise- if what it does works for you then great.  If not, well there are other choices.

As for the Harp, well that thing is neat too, but for a completely different reason- harp tools are historical and hugely popular amongst the corkscrew crowd.

I would like to like them better, but the SpydeRench is quirky.  I did not know they have a Byrd version of the SpydeRench.  I will pass on that.  The pliers just does not seem solid and usefull like the Gerber/Leatherman/Swiss ones.

I will stick to the Spyderco knives.

Like most of the Byrd designs the ByrdRench is just a cheaper version of the SpydeRench.  To be honest I wouldn't recommend it except that it's easier to find/more readily available than the SpydeRench.

What really bothered me about it was that it is pretty well around the same price as the SpydeRench- usually the Byrd is found around the $80 mark (although there have been some deals found here and there) while the Spyder can be had for around $100 or so.  Honestly, for that difference, I would pick the SpydeRench every time, assuming one wanted to spend money on an awkward tool!  :P

Here are some comparison pics from my review:

Once again I think these were a great concept but I would have liked to see a second generation addressing some of the issues with them rather than just the reissues they keep doing.  There is some great potential here with a few design tweaks.

A spyderwrench is on my list of tool's I got to own one day.

If I was smarter I would have bought one when I had the chance.

The byrd wrench file is rough I want the diamond file the spyder has besides that a byrd would be almost as good.

They are a neat tool with lots of good ideas in them- I just think that they need to go back to the drawing board and update the design to address some of the issues with them- issues such as when you take the rasp/file out to get at the screwdriver bits, then if you don't put the rasp/file back before using the screwdriver all the other bits fall out as soon as you turn the handle.  Or that the pliers always lock or fall apart when opened a certain distance.  Or that despite it being quite large it has relatively few features, and is missing very basic things like bottle/can openers and wire cutters.

I love the design and I can see where they were going with it, but I think its not quite there yet, but it could be relatively easily.

I'm going to try but a bug in spyderco Ear and try get us a new tool.
From what Grant said the tool has to many flaws. I'm kinda glad I don't have one.

I forgot the lack of Wire cutters is why I bought a swiss tool spirit instead of the spyderwrench.

If I find a deal on a used one I'm still going to try it.

Spyderco Can make a better Tool. We need a new made in U.S.A. Spydertool.

None of the former Spyderco Spydertools were made in the USA.  They also are marginal at best if you ask me by design.  I will sell my NIB one one day as I just do not like it.

The original run of SpydeRenches were made in the USA. Its the follow up runs that were made elsewhere.

I'm working on a trade for a Spyderwrench.

After wanting one for 5 or so years I hope to show off a Spyderwrench soon. :woohoo:

I am going to put it against a swiss tool spirit and do a side by side review.

Wish me Luck :multi:

I have a little rule of buy knife from knife companies, tool from tool companies, and flashlight from flashlight companies. While one can make another it'll never be as good/value. Well spyderco isn't a tool company.

I got to disagree.

I had a Buck Tool that was a very well made tool.

I want a Kershaw Multitool "the vise grip one" I've used one and it was a excellent tool.

I think your missing out on a lot of cool tool's.

I think that was the mentality that caused Gerber and Buck to slam the door in Tim Leatherman's face wasn't it?  :D

I can certainly understand where you are coming from, especially with the lights.  While there are some good tools from knife companies (and vice versa), there are very few good lights from knife or tool companies, and fewer good tools and knives from light companies.

Well it's a general rule, if the offering is good enough I'm all for it. But let's just say I won't be the first guinea pig in line, the rule is a direct result of being burned a few times.  :D

I never really understood the tool harp

Any one using one of them:hatsoff:

It's also on My list of tool's I'm going to try. There's just something about it  that draws me to the design. http://m.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=206 I'm trying to remember if it was always a Byrd  ???

It's hammer would be handy little tapper.

I would put it with my messing around tool box for para cord, leather work and knife mod stuff.
I think all it's tool's would be useful there but I can't see edcing one.

So who's used one.

My spyderwrench fell through :( I will get my hands on one sooner or latter  >:D
