I wanted to try Win 8 Pro but I refuse to pay $199 for it for my 1 year old HP Elitebook so I guess I have to stay with win 7.

I guess I cant get one as an upgrade for my laptops so they think I will pay $199 for one....NOT!

I like to play with all the OS's like Windows, Linux and Mac's but wont pay that for one.  Eventually, I might get one when the price comes down so I can check it out.  Maybe find a system builder!  I used to be one but lost interest so I dont do much of it anymore, however I do still repair and like to play with the newest OS's! :D

I have to keep up on technology, otherwise I cant fix issues some folks have.  :)

That was a typo... I think I paid around $60 for my upgrade copy of 8.

I'm considering giving it a shot and I was wondering if anyone else has tried it, and what successes, failures and impressions you may have?

Seriously this tile thing is no problem.  If it bothers you press the tile marked "DESKTOP" and it brings you right back to a Win7/Vista/XP/98 type interface.
Def

:tu: And that's what I did.  Tiles? Why? So I can sync my computer to the smartphone I don't have?

I got a new netboook and was forced to use W8. First thing, I had to uninstall all the bloatware playing in the background.

W8 doesn't seem to like Google Chrome. My internet speed slowed to a crawl. My  wife's' eight-year-old Mac was running rings around this machine as it chguged and choked on Chrome.

I use Chrome on Windows 8 and have no problems at all with it.

Our new pc came with Windows 8, and I actually like it. It's been a while since I've liked a Windows OS, and though it did take a little while to get use to no start menu, I actually prefer the tiles now.

Well, I returned that accursed Windows 8 machine. After almost two weeks of struggle, I gave up. Connectivity problems with Wifi. I tried everything that I was supposed to try, and then some. Call me crazy, but when I buy something new, I expect it to WORK.

Big problem with Win8 is that it doesn’t like WiFi. It drops connectivity and has slow speed. My wife’s EIGHT YEAR OLD Mac ran rings around that Win8 machine.

So now I’m seriously considering getting a Mac, despite the cost. Macs are reliable, they WORK, will last 5-7 years (or more), have great customer service, and there’s a Mac store nearby  that I could take it to get fixed.  Imagine that, being able to talk to someone face-to-face and getting something taken care of. Who would have thought?

Conversely, everyone other company has terrible customer service. And with a Windows machine, you’re only option to get W7 is to order a machine online.. and if  you get a lemon, there is no store to take it to. You’re stuck calling the customer servicer line in India. Been there, done that, never again.

So yeah, MicroSuck Windows 8 has driven me to consider buying a Mac

Maybe it was just the wireless card in the pc? Ours has a wireless card and it hasn't dropped the connection once yet and it's also very fast.

I do agree that Mac's are usually better hardware wise, even compared to a custom built pc. Our 6 year old iMac is still going strong, but it's now our kids computer for watching movies and things like Johnny 's Math.

I've been using Windows since version 3.0 so I've had my ups and downs over the years, but I really like 8.0.  I guess it depends on one's expectations.  My first impressions of 8.0 were positive ones, and the more I've learned, the more I am impressed.  I'm also fond of how the various software I use has progressed over the years.  I have a brand new Toshiba laptop that came with 8.0 installed and it runs like a well-oiled machine  :2tu:

Just installed Win8 about an hour ago.
Seems to be all good so far, but I did a clean installation on a new SSD so I have a full applications load cycle to go through now.
As usual i will install a few "must haves" and then add others as I need them
