Travelling to Scotland!
on: June 19, 2012, 01:20:22 PM
Me and my new girlfriend is traveling to Scotland this Sunday and staying for 5 days. We land in Edinburgh and will take the train to Glasgow. Have been reading up on places that is of interest to visit but anyone have any hidden gems that you won’t find in the tourist information or stores where you can find a great deal on sharp and shiny stuff? Does anyone know how the train system is in Scotland in case we want to visit a place that is outside of Glasgow? But the most important question is there any members from Glasgow that want to meet up and have a beer or 10 :P

I think Ricky (Jock) is in or near Glasgow as well.

Have a great trip!

Make sure you try some Haggis and a Mars bar in batter.

Am definitely trying the Mars bar, the Haggis on the other hand I’m not that sure about. If I found a place that will give me a small sample I will try but I won’t order an entire plate of Haggis just to find out that I hate the stuff :P The skirt depends on how much cash I got, have heard that a quality one costs a good deal.

You do know haggis is pretty much indistinguishable from "innmatpølse med byggryn"? Really nothing scary about it. Sounds tasty, never tasted haggis as such, but read lots of recipes and eaten lots of food containing pretty much exactly the same ingredients and prepared almost exactly the same way.

Never had innmatpølse so don’t really know what that taste like, the only internal organs I have eaten is lungs, lungemos, but that was fried and not cocked, never had any of our disgusting national food. They served fiskemølje once when I was in the military but I had a major hangover so I wasn’t open for expanding my horizon and eating cocked cod liver, tongue and fish eggs.

Kelvingrove is a museum and art gallery that is well worth a visit.  Decent arms and armour collection. :tu:  I am also told that the Burrell collection and the transport museum (the Riverside museum) are both worth a visit. http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/museums/our-museums/Pages/home.aspx  Sorry to say that Glasgow isn't a city I know very well.

I would also suggest you are extremely cautious about what MT you carry in Glasgow, the local Police are very tuned in to potential knife crime and don't have a reputation for being lenient.  A UK legal SAK or MT should be OK for daytime but I wouldn't carry anything at all when going out for the night (dinner, bars, clubs, pubs etc).

I have a policy that I don’t bring or carry any sharp and shiny objects in countries that have never visited before or where the knife law is obscure
