Using retired tools?
on: October 25, 2006, 08:43:59 AM
I keep reading about you guys getting SideClips and other retired tools.  Do you guys use these tools as EDCs and if you do so do you find yourself being carefull when using the tools and blades so not to break them.  In the case of the SideClip it seems to be getting higher and higher in price on Ebay.  Just curious because I have a Pulse on the way.

As a general rule of thumb, no I don't usually carry retired tools for a few reasons, like they are collectibles and most importantly, they are usually inferior to more modern tools.  That's not really a bad thing as we are in a stage of multitool evolution that causes new tools to be coming out all the time that "fix" the boo boos of the past.  Why carry a PST and have it dig into your hands when you use it when you could carry a Wave and be comfortable and get the same jobs done?  Why carry a Schrade Tuff Tool and risk half the tools folding in use when you could get all locking components with a Spirit?

Of course, as with any rule, there are exceptions- I will use a tool if it's handy when I need one, and I do carry the Juice Kf4 fairly often.  I find it to be a very nice little tool, and despite it being discontinued, it is far too useful to be shunned.

Well, I'm using the Sideclip as an EDC for now.  I don't have a problem using a retired tool as an EDC.  Heck, they were made to be used, no?  It's like carrying an old Schrade Old Timer pocket knife.  No, they aren't made anymore, but they are made to be used.  Sure the older tools have features that have been upgraded, but hey if it works for ya, why not?  Like I said, old or not, tools were made to be used.

I carry my PST bravely against the world (though, as I am forever complaining, I ended up with two of them, so It's not like I'm in huget trouble if it disappears)
If I can get my pale, bony hands on a Supertool I will also carry that particular retired model in brassy boldness against loss or damage.

Odds are I will probably carry my wave more if it became a discontinued (I've been trying to get my mitts on an Old Wave for carry...)

Maybe I just feel snazzy being able to tell people (whether they ask or not) that "they don't make this one anymore"

Nomad, your time machine is really hitting some good threads tonight!

My MPT has been riding in my pocket for a week or so now, before that I carried an Old Wave or a PST. I like the older tools, they seem to carry easier than our current options even if there is a slight loss in ergonomics or utility.

The lack of locks, ergonomic handles, and other mumbo-jumbo/rap music these kids have today seem to result in light, easy to use, and I think very handsome tools!

I've just had a little Design Theory (bing!)

I wonder if in older tools, the greater part of the Weight or Size is in the Plier head (at least compared so some new tools?)

Hmm, the more I think about it, the sillier it is. Go about your business.

I'm a lover of the older tools as well.  I just like there simplicity and in the case of Leatherman, there lack of ergonomics but solidness.

I do still use my retired tools and my Supertool, PST and KF4 still do see lots of use.
I'm back!!

Considering I've just bought an original LM Supertool ( Thanks Micky d ) it would be a shame not to go Retro and EDC it for a while .I know they are discontinued but they are also still under warranty so what could go wrong .

I'll have to ask how they go with replacing Retired tools.
There are none left in stock in the Aus Leatherman Repair depot* - I wonder if they'd get some over from old stock in US (if there are any there at all), or replace with new model.

*At least, none they'll tell me about, cagey folk that they are.

I've been flirting with putting my old Wave away just because I'd hate to lose it. When I do, it will be missed. It's not necessarily my favorite tool, but it's been the best overall carry I've used. I'm thinking of carrying my Supertool 200 in its place. I'm not crazy about the ST200 and it's fairly robust.

I would definitely be up for an Old Wave if one came my way.

Turn one of those pesky Slot head drivers into a Reamer.

It wouldn't be my dream multi, but it'd be servicable.
