I now have 2.
on: February 16, 2008, 05:09:56 PM
Yesterday I received a surprise present from Mike (micky d) as a congrats for my recent good news.  I opened it up and was surprised to find a Cold Steel Canadian Belt knife that me and Mike had spoken about a few times as I had said that I was keen to get one.  Well now that I am lucky enough to own one I am certainly not disappointed.  :)  I really like the blade shape and it feels really good in the hand.  The blade cuts really well and I think will perform well in many different cutting tasks.

Here are some pics that I quickly took today...

That's a beaut, Benner!  I really would like to hear your thoughts on this knife after you get some use with it. Good luck with it.

Very nice! The blade/handle arrangement strikes me as odd though, just like Def's Grohmann. I'll need to try one someday.

I thought it looked odd when I first saw one as well, but after a while it really grew on me.

The odd shape is why I asked for a small review once he gets to use it. I've never handled a knife like that, but from what I've heard they lend themselves to any type of work easily.

I cannot recall ever reading a bad review of a BR knive. That's a nice knife, Viking. Good luck with it.

They are great knives and well worth the price.

I have been looking at some of the CS budget blades lately. I would certainly be interested on how it is.

Well I am off this week so I'll give it a good test and report back on how I get on.  :)

I'd be interested to see what Def thought in a comparison between the Cold Steel and the Grohmann.

You are probably right.  Would be interested to see how the Cold Steel compared though.  And like you say, for $15 it's a bargain! :)

Well I have used the CBK a lot over the last few days and I have been really impressed with it. :)  The blade is really sharp and after a lot of use has held up well.  It has been used for a lot of tasks both around the home and in the garden and has performed well from cutting vegetables to lightly chopping a few small branches.  The shape is really comfortable to use as is the handle which is averagely thin in comparison to other knives.  I find this style of handle suits me as I have smaller hands.  If I had one complaint it would be that the jimping is a little aggressive and that after an extended period of use this can make your thumb a little sore.

I have liked this style of knife so much that I have now gone and ordered the Grohmann version fitted with Micarta scales.  I know that this knife is sometimes critizised for it looks and lack of a "macho" image, but I find this a huge advantage with the way the knife is perceived over in this country.

I would strongly recommend giving a Canadian belt knife a go.  For $15 I don't think you can really go wrong.  ;)

I noticed the large jimping on the spine and wondered about it. Why do you suppose the spacing is so big?

It's to look more "tactical" than the real version by Grohmann!    :pok:

Back in my early days of ninja-ing I spent a fair bit of time learning to fight with knives and I have to say, the Grohmann's leaf shape blade is a great extension of the hand.  The ergonomic handle is very comfortable, so what you end up with is something that is very fast and very dangerous.  It would make an excellent fighting knife if one were so inclined.  All you'd need it to carve a groove in it to control blood spray...   ::)
