84mm ALOX Customs
on: February 16, 2008, 08:58:34 PM
I thought I'd post a picture of a couple 84mm alox knives I just made.    I know there are some diehard fans of the smaller format SAKs out there and for some reason, Victorinox never makes the 84mm alox knives with a full compliment of tools.

The red is a new generation voyageur which is a copy of a highly sought after model from the 80's.
I also found a vintage ribbed aluminum 84mm knife that had damaged tools and mad another voyageur in the retro style alox.

The orange one is a cadet with the saw added.   I also fitted it up with scissors to make a 4 layer and it works well.

I'm working on a 6 layer alox "champ"  that I think will have alll the tools you can find on the 84mm knives and  couple that were never put on the 84mm frame

Blade/ small file
Serrated Blade/ watchmaker blade
Saw
Scissors
Magnifyer/phillips
can opener/caplifter

It's nice that Victorinox just put out a bunch of colored alox cadets so now all these knives can be made in whtever flavor suits you

I'm still waiting on some more donor knives to come in but I'm looking forward to a gunmetal lumberjack!!

Very impresive work my friend. I still got to get in contact with you about doing my farmer. I would love to add a second blade to it!

Thanks!

Seatbelt cutter??   I don't now about that one.    i could reshape a blade into one I guess.     There is an 84mm serrated blade that might  be better than a regular blade for that also.

Combotool, cap lifter, and can opener?

Without that fourth layer (Cap/can) that would be a mighty fine option.

If there was some way to get a Reamer into it just might be perfect.

I was waiting for someone to catch that.

I peened the thing together before realizing I had grabbed the combo tool instead of the file.

I redid it as a 3 layer without the scissors.

A-hah! So he is a mortal man.

Surely Vic has a mightier file than the ol "Nail Tidy"

I'm as mortal as they come.    Lots of "offerings to the god of SAKs" have been generated here!    This could be considered a lesser SAK foul  ::)

That is kind of a wuss file, but the knife is a bit diminuative too so I guess it fits.    The 84's don't come with anything bigger.

What about the long backspring file on the cellidor models?  I would say it's a much better file than that one.

I would think that nail file (pictured) could be ground to work as a reamer of sorts without losing all ability to file nails.

I like that 1st orange one. I would think that instead of the "extra" combo blade a small second knife blade would be sweet.

I like these especially the silver one. Anyway to replace the combo tool with an awl?  If not, I'll take the silver one as is.... :gimme:

I was wondering if the 93mm awl could be reshaped and have a new pivot hole drilled to fit in the 84's but haven't had a chance yet.

As was mentioned, the file could be reshaped into an awl or even the small blade and put opposite the large blade, but it would be cooler to have the one that folds over the handle a little like the 93's have.

Terry, you're right about the long file.    But I think it has to have the 4th pin like on the cellidor models to make the spring work.    I don't know that it could be fitted to the alox knife without drilling a hole in the scale for the extra pin (which would go through the shield and look kind of funny.)

Those alox customs look really great Scibeer.  I just recieved a 84mm from Felinevet in Autumn Orange.  Orange is my favorite color it even matches my car and most of my golf clubs. :)
