My PS crapped out!!!
on: June 28, 2012, 09:30:37 AM
The spring in the scissors broke...

It's kinda my fault... I wasn't being careful when I folded them up, and tried to close them into the handle of the tool when they were open.  Ugh.  Whatever.

I emailed LM about it and asked if they'd cover it under warranty, and if so, how I go about getting it done.

Anyone want to relate experiences they've had with LM warranty service, so I can get an idea of what to expect?

I've warrantied a number of torches in the past several years, and knives too, but never any kind of MT or SAK.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Seems a few people here have had problems with those scissors. Mine haven't broke ... yet  ::) ... but I have had them jam up as the spring bar has been pushed sideways rather than backwards. Not their finest moment this tool. Add in the scissors and file being put in "backwards", and I think this is yet another sloppy effort from Leatherman.

Mine is getting occasional carry with a black Pioneer, but I'm far from impressed with it. I'm half tempted to switch it out with a black Gerber Dime which is a far superior tool IMO, but I'm sticking with it for now

Mine broke, but on a PS4, and N_N_Rs, broke this week too. There are other members who reported this problem in her thread.

I replaced mine with a spair set Steve sent me as I have a torx version of the PS4 and didn't want it replaced with rivets. You being in the US, I doubt you'll have any problems with warranty replacement. Good luck. :tu:

Never used my PS (It's a MT.O Numbered edition) but I have been through a few experiences with LTG's warranty.  Nothing but great, easy experiences for me.  Print of the form, mail it to Leatherman in the US, or any of the distributors listed on their site internationally, wait, get a new one back.

A friend and I were working on an older Deuce and a half military truck, which used 24VDC for the lighting, and he blasted the tip of the pliers on his Charge off when he accidentally shorted a lighting terminal.  They even covered that.

So they got back to me and provided a link to the form... said just send it in, and they'd take care of it.

Sounds good, but I'm pretty much off of the PS now.  I don't use pliers an awful lot, and when I do, it's almost always for a very small object, or a precision job.  SAK pliers work better for me than the PS pliers for those kinds of things.

And yeah, the backwardness of the tools is a bit of an irritant.  Once I get it back, I'll give it to my son so he can have something he can actually carry at school.

Good choice, this tool is great for school carry. Just don't be surprised if you get a call from a teacher, I've had so many paranoid teachers almost confiscate mine because they thought the scissors were a "weapon"   ::)

Yes, as enki pointed out, my PS4 broke, too. The distributors in my country just cut me off. I wrote to LM directly and the response was really kind. They told me that they'd contact our distributors, though, so I'm now waiting for a miracle to happen. I guess that since you're from the US, it will be much easier & faster for you. Good luck!

My PS crapped out!!!

This is my only experience with Leatherman warranty:

I'm in the states and had a poor experience with my Leatherman Style PS that coincidentally broke in the exact same spot.  (Post on another thread, the scissor spring on my Style PS broke).

I returned mine to Leatherman with the standard warranty form, and foolishly selected the replacement tool option, figuring it would be quicker.  Big mistake. Never again.

My tool was practically brand new. Carried some (in pocket) and rarely and lightly used.  After a few days, received  an email stating a replacement tool was in the mail.  Yippee! Right?  Wrong.  The tool I received was a POS.  The tool was clearly a refurb.  It had walnut polishing media jammed in all the nooks and crannies. The tweezer, once I managed to get it out, would not go back in. And worst of all, the tool itself was tweaked.  It would not open and close properly and had wear marks where the frame was contacting the plier head.  Not a happy camper here.  I emailed Leatherman, and after almost a week, received an email from a CS rep.  It took another day or two to receive the  promised UPS call tag(via email).  I'll probably get it out via UPS tomorrow. I would best receive a tool that matches the condition of my original tool...

Just sayin'

My PS came back from LM in the mail today... about a week and a half since I first sent it out.

The spring in the scissors is fixed, and the tool looks in good shape.  Doesn't look like it was polished or cleaned, or anything like that.  Works just fine.
