Help me ID this ancient Gerber MT.
on: June 30, 2012, 02:30:57 AM
I got this about 20 years ago, when I was working as the bike guy in an outdoors store, kind of like REI.  It's been repurposed around a number of times the past few years, but I honestly can't remember the last time I actually used it.

Or rather just the original, hybrid-head-style Multiplier; perhaps before the 600 designation started to be used.

Thanks guys... it has no model designation on it anywhere I can find.  I seem to recall that when I got it, Gerber was just starting to do MT's.  Does it have any kind of collectible value?

If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to trade it; as it is, it's just going to sit in my drawer and take up space.

Everyone needs an old Pinchy!

It's an important piece in the evolution of multitools- that one spawned all the current sliding head plier tools, including all the MP660 variants, all the MP400 variants, the Diesel, Flik, Freehand and the new Leatherman OHT.

Looks similar to the original Multiplier I had (and sold), though I see a different blade on it where I had a file instead.   Stopped using it after it pinched my palm.

I had a really nice BO one, but the first time it chomped down on my palm, was the very moment I decided that it had to go.

Glad I got one to try, but I was also glad to get rid of it and I'd never get another

Sadly I have only got the one in my collection, and it was a gift from another member.  I can't remember if it was the Maine Meetup or that time in Vegas, but I couldn't believe someone thought highly enough of me to give me such a rare and valuable gift.  I know you can still find these for $20 or so here and there, but it's not the monetary value, it's the fact that this one has some pretty rare markings and is such an early variant- and it's in exquisite shape without even a slight mark on it.

I doubt I'd have been able to give it away!  :D

Thanks for the info guys.  I still have no idea what to do with the thing.  It's awfully bulky and heavy, and yeah, I have pinched myself with it before, so I'm not going to give it to my son.

I guess I'll throw it in the emergency box I made for my wife's van.  I'll wager it's probably going to work better for misc. roadside issues than the Suspension I put in there last summer.
