Leather belthangers
on: July 05, 2012, 08:52:34 PM
I really like a nice piece of traditional leather! These are not made by me, but I am picking up on my old hobby leatherworking, so more to follow.  ;)

Any more fans around?

This is an old pouch I made myself for the Spirit. The little Victorinox sheath fits a Cadet or Executive perfectly, but doesn't have a loop so it needs some home sewing.

BTW, thanks for responding guys  :D :tu:

You can too mate. Not many tools are needed, skills comes with practise. Check some tutorials, it really isn't that hard to build something nice for yourself.

Like to show this vintage leather sheath. Got it as a present from a friend in Michigan. Beautiful details on the leatherwork. Fits a five layer swiss army knife and rides comfy on the belt.

Those look like a neat idea.  I like the idea of being able to hang it securely from my belt and having enough slack to tuck it in my front pocket at the same time.

I quite like leather pouches for stuff - keeps them cleaner, stop them scratching my phone and they smell nice :)

That's one reason I like so much too. The belthanger pouch rides very comfortable on the side of the pocket, and stays in place due to the strap.
So the knife is easy reachable, always in the same position, leaving the bottom of the pocket free. Fitting is great because it's custom leather.
I use two sizes the most, one for a 2 to 3 layer SAK, and another for a 3 to 4 layer SAK. These sizes you hardly notice carrying.
Quite nice, discreet, durable, functional, beautiful. :)

I believe the originals were called Buckaroo, made by Ron Ryder: see added pics.

Awesome mate!  :tu: :tu: Did you have fun making them? Love the wetformed keyring sheath!

What thickness leather did you use on the beltpouch?
It takes some playing with the strap lenght and construction to get it right.
Are you happy how it functions?

Something a bit different
I made a belt hanger for my 'Lofty' camping knife from an old belt,
I'm not 100% happy so it might change, I did try to get better pictures of it being worn but 'the model' was too fat  :-[

:salute: Help yourself, it was made from a second hand belt

I am thinking of getting 'the leatherman' in town to make one with press studs/poppers
But I will wait until I have had a chance to test this one out, I'm not sure about the length it needs to be (this one is adjustable)  :-\

I am liking the leather pouches in this thread  :tu:

Thanks. The leather is 4mm thick and very firm had to be soaked to bend it and form for fitting.  The leather used on the outside faces of the keying is actually from an old pair of leather trousers I picked up in a charity shop. It is very supple and so  does not need soaking to take the shape of whatever is put in it.

The belt pouch works well for what I will use it (BBQ and poss camping). I will use it as a dangler ( with the pouch it is too thick in pocket).  When I make another, if I have slightly thinner leather I will use that plus increase the leathers length by 1cm, but as I said for a first attempt at this style  I am quite pleased.

These are a great idea! I've made a couple of belt pouches (of too poor a quality to show on here - but they work) and am at present dangling my Huntsman (oo-er) from a lanyard attached to my belt. I think I'll make a belthanger - nice examples on here.

My only concern is rust due to moisture build up if it is inside the leather while in pocket.

Amici,
Not a big fan of hangers for a SAK or even a fixed blade. I'll stick with a lanyard for pocket,  or a custom Kydex sheath for neck carry.

Cheers,
Serge

I tried to keep this Clean and Simple  :D  Pocket or neck carry.
Pouch ~3mm, strap ~2mm with magnetic closure. Holding up great after 5 years regular use.

Hey Serge, those belthangers are ment to put in your pocket. There is no tension on the strap, it doesn't dangle from the belt. I don't like anything dangling on my belt either. Like you, I do like kydex, if it's well made. I have a few myself. Please open up a new topic and let's see them. I'm very much interested in modern materials and set ups as well. I'm not saying what is beter or worse, that's really not the point. I have noticed that as a newbee (?) you have to take real care in expressing a different opinion. On forums in general, but around here as well. Personaly I like many different opinions. Otherwise it gets boring quickly. Like in this case/topic, I'm just sharing what I like: old skool leather (must be my age).  ;) Happy to see others do too.
Cheers,
WL
