Bergans?
on: July 07, 2012, 10:35:02 PM
I know from experience in the military that a Bergans backpack is exceptional good gear, field proven. Does anybody have more information on the Bergans hatchet? It's pictured below:

I would suspect it to be produced by somebody else, just as their knives. Bergans never produced their knives themselves, but they did make the sheaths. (The new anniversary model was produced by Hattori, for instance. An early producer of the old knives was Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk, better known for the Krag-Jørgensen rifles.)

Just to add my own .02 credits, the hatchet looks pretty much like any other small hatchet produced in these parts to my eye. Øyo still produces one that looks very much the same.

Edit: I double checked, and there are differences. Sorry, I'm more of a knife guy. :)

Found some info on Bergans, but my norwegian is a bit rusty  :D
Is there any mentioning of axes? My guess is made by Mora (?)

I can translate if you provide a link or upload the info? Or have you already done so, and I didn't notice the link?

Per always has something on his blog. :D

There is no mention of axes, though. Almost the only mention of Mora knives in the article is the fact a knife from Bergans was more expensive (a Mora could be had for about 1 krone in the thirties, while a Bergans started at 5 kroner and maxed out at 9 kroner).

The only manufacturer mentioned is Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk. Per mentions they did a lot of stuff like that in the thirties. The other factories and foundries mentioned are competitors, mentioned as part of the historical perspective.

The rest is historical information about the knives, especially Slirkniv, and information about construction details and sheaths

Dug around a little more in Per's archive:

On http://kniver.blogspot.no/2006/04/kniv-til-bergans-jubileum-en-ny-kniv.html he mentions Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk, Eriksson, Helle, Henckels and Wingen as having manufactured the Bergans knives. Eriksson is of course a well known name for anybody interested in Mora knives, so your guess about the source for the axes may actually be spot on.

Thanks for dugging around.
The vintage Bergans knives with the blades by Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk, very very nice.
