Farmer envy
on: July 08, 2012, 12:15:19 PM
Looking at the excellent Farmer thread of Ashleys has made me very jealous of my wife's Farmer (which she flatly refuses to give me). I EDC a Huntsman which as everyone knows has everything the Farmer has, AND SCISSORS!.

BUT...........It isn't Alox, the tools aren't as chunky, and most importantly (for me) it doesn't have the in-line awl.

I have begun to be dissatified with my Huntsman and crave a Farmer. I already have enough SAK's (I know, an anathema on this site!) so pour some love on the Huntsman which has served us all so well, so I can feel satisfied with what I have.

Is this natural to always want another SAK no matter how many you have? I'd have a Farmer and a CT41 (and stop there..................probably).

Thought, love please.............

How about getting a Farmer modded with scissors.

the huntsman is a bit overlooked, I bought one for my friend a few years ago before I was seriously into sharp things. I thought a saw was essential, the thing that defined a SAK as having everything you need.

I do like the farmer, but scissors are essential for me, so I had Neil mod me a harvester plus scissors.

I could Millhouse, I could, but

a. I can't justify the money, and

b. I already have 7 SAK's and however much I'd like to get some more, I feel I have enough. I need to be satisfied with what I've got (or trick my wife into giving me her Farmer).

The Huntsman is a truly great sak, and has the advantage of being compact while being loaded with tool :)

It's not a Farmer though :D

Well I love my Huntsman (it was the third SAK I ever bought), superb tool selection especially with the fabulous scissors.  The Huntsman also has a small blade that the Farmer is lacking, corkscrew, tweezers and toothpick.  The saw on the Farmer is exactly the same as the one on the Huntsman, so no advantage there.  You could also add the pin and mini-screwdriver to your Huntsman, or even go the whole hog and get it a new set of clothes and buy some plus scales and add a pen as well.

Frankly I don't know why anyone would rather have a Farmer than a Huntsman. ???  Does that help? :D

Yes it does - thanks. I have the pin and the mini SD (a birthday present this May) and you're right, it is an excellent SAK.

Are there any non alox models with the in-line awl or is there a mod out there someone has done?

I can't think of a good reason why it hasn't been incorporated as standard in all models - it's so much better placed than the back line awl on cellidor models.

For me, the size of the Farmer is perfect.  It is large enough to have a decent grip for working and is small enough for comfortable pocket carry.  I've noticed my favorite EDC SAKs tend to be around the width of a Farmer.

Coincidence? I think no.

(I don't think that's gonna help... :ahhh)

No it doesn't help! you're all supposed to be bigging up the Huntsman, not saying how great the Farmer is - I KNOW how great the Farmer is! :D

I've nothing against the Farmer particularly, but I genuinely prefer the Huntsman for all the reasons I listed above.  I can agree though that the alox in-line awl is a superb bit of kit and it would be nice to have it as an option on a cellidor model.

Joking aside the Huntsman is a great sak, I've gifted them, and still have one around the house, and another in my GF car, and I wouldn't do that if I didn't have faith in them :)

Excellent pics! Some great wildlife shots too. I remember seeing a black squirrel when I was in the alps a few years ago. It's such a beautiful place.

For me scissors are a must. Even if I carry a SAK without, I need to have another tool with them. Aside from that virtually all my daily carry SAKs have corkscrew, mini driver, toothpick and tweezers. That would be a huge sacrifice for me to make for an inline awl, when there's a backspring awl that will suffice without losing any of the other capabilities. Very few of my SAKs are alox, as that means I have to carry other stuff to make up for what's missing

The alox I do have, I like ... but I can't carry them on their own

The Farmer and Huntsman are both great SAKs, but I agree, the Huntsman packs more punch as far as capabilities.  I would be happy and stick with the Huntsman.  Hope this helps.

It does help thanks - I wouldn't want to be without any of the tools on the Huntsman including the T and T. I use them all every day.

The problem with SAK's is that there are so many of them each with their own advantages, it's almost like not one of them is totally perfect so you just have to find the one that suits you best. Or, like many on the forum, the 50 that suit you best. (Ignore me, I'm just jealous). :D

I don't use SAK's very often and only have 2 Huntsman in my FAK's. Never explored any other models.

Recently, I won a custom Alox on this forum, my first experience of Alox. I must admit, it feels much nicer in the hand.

Not really - I've got an Alox Soldier ('08), a Rucksack, a Recruit, a couple of Classics and a Wenger Pocketgrip on it's way back from warrenty repair. All well used. Thanks for the suggestion though.

it can happen, sometimes for me more important things like new clothes or saving money have taken a back seat to the next knife that I had to have, which is not a good feeling . Anyway, by now I've learnt some perspective and know when it is right to spend and when not to.

This should be an enjoyable hobby, if it is interfering with other financial goals, or causing arguments with the family, then don't let us on the forums 'enable' you. Remember, noone on the various forums is ever going to tell you not to buy that new knife >:D, we just want to share cool knives. You have to decide for yourself what really fits best with your budget. Some of us spend hundreds per month and others don't even buy one new knife a year. Its all good.

I know what you mean. I'm lucky- I have only bought 3 SAK's over about 10 years (my Rucksack and Soldier and my wifes Farmer) - the rest I have traded for other knives (which I have also traded/been gifted). Although I get a lot of enjoyment from this site and from owning SAKs, they are just not important enough for me to spend money on that I don't have. I was just interested.
