Well, got a facebook update on LM hiring.

Although I'd never move to Portland, I figure I'd apply to the Industrial Design position anyways to see if I had the stuff.

I had to answer a pretty lengthy survey and questionnaire about my design practice and process, but you never know

I likely won't get anything back. I am not really willing to relocate, but it was fun answer their questionnaire.

  • I may get older but I refuse to grow up.
I hope you sent them a few links to your mods too attached to the questionnaire, that would surely make them push you to the top of their list. :tu:

Or offer to re-disign their multitool sheaths

Good luck.

Very exciting. I know you have the talent to do it. Would you even consider relocating if they guaranteed you the position?

I have no idea. It would be a REALLY hard decision. It would have to be a substantial sum for me to relocate AGAIN and with Skinth taking off like it is...

It was more of a fun exercise...they had questions like:

Q:
Can you describe your design process phase by phase?

A:
I work with direct problem solving and iteration. Using successive generations to identify problems and interferences. Going quickly from prototype to prototype to ensure that the final solution is the best option available.

Q:
Who or what are Leatherman’s most serious competitors?

A:
Owning many tools from both Leatherman and Gerber, I think the most serious competitors (Besides Gerber) will be the Mutlitasker Tools group. Their design of a die hard tool using current, space age, on demand manufacturing and robust materials (G10, D2 steel etc) results in a tool that can be easily altered FROM the manufacturing stand point rather than a massive retooling operation.

Although they are very specific in their tool manufacturing currently, their eventual expansion into more civilian and general public use tools will greatly increase their exposure.

I don't know if they'll bite but who will know if I didn't try :)

I almost put in mine as well, when they notified of openings. Alas, not willing to move and the current work I do is probably more fun than designing mass produced tools, despite my multitool fetish.

Sure was tempting though.

 :tu: to that!!

Best of luck!  If anyone at Leatherman reads this site, and knows it's you applying, they'd really be crazy not to try and snatch you up.  Some of the creations that you've come up with are exactly what Leatherman needs to pull ahead (way ahead) of the competition and make them really stand out of the crowd.

Just think, you could use us to help out with product testing

Best luck Eric!!! I can assure something, if they considered the quality of work above all the other  aspects (like the need of relocation, etc) the position would be yours without a doubt.   :tu:
