Have you got an irrational love of a certain sak?
on: February 20, 2008, 10:54:41 PM
Is there a particular SAK, amoungst the huge number of models, that really sings too you, the one that you carry through thick and thin ???

The one that may not be the biggest or flashest, but has the tools you need to get the job done, and engenders your total faith in it ???

So what model does for you and why ???

PS I think you regulars will know my SAK of choice :D

Mine is probably as predictable as yours Mike.  :D  But it's the SI.  I just love the shape, size, feel and the compliment of tools it has.  It really does have that "indestructable" feel. :)

Don't get me wrong, I do love the regular cellidor SAK's, but there is just something special about an Alox.

I'm with you Mike, the Farmer pretty well does it for me.

I have a nice vintage red one in my pocket right now.

I want a farmer but with a file instead of the saw.  Now that would be nice.

You know who to talk to....

The Farmer is the one I have ultimate trust in but, as far as "irrational love", I'd have to say that is for this one:

Well as some of you know I love my new Farmer but I also have a deep love for the Tinker. It's another one of the all time great SAK's. An almost perfect compromise between portability and usability. I EDC'd a Tinker for almost 15 years. Of course I'd throw other knives in there occasionally but I always went back to the Tinker. I'm not crazy about the plastic handles so I had Scott make this for me. It's a Tinker with red G-10 handles. Now, I must admit, if there's one knife that can replace my Farmer as an EDC it would be a bright orange G-10 handled Hiker. I have dreams about that. Here's the custom Tinker

The stag Soldier in my pic and the Tinker the ducktape has pictured were both done by Knifecoop.

He disassembles the knife and makes new outer liners and bolsters from nickel silver.  He then reassebles them and adds peened scales in a choice of many different materials.

For me, it would have to be the Farmer! They feel bulletproof and they have always handled whatever I threw at them with ease!

YES!

I love my Wenger Backpacker and it is not love at first sight. This irrational love developed over the span of 22 years.
Here's my love story...

I acquired my Wenger Backpacker in 1985 and I immediately EDC it. It was my one and only tool from 1985 until 1998 (13 yrs.). In 1998 I got my second tool, a Leatherman ST. When I started to EDC my ST, my Backpacker always supplemented it at all times. From 1998 up to present there are times that I EDC only the Backpacker and not any MT, that is when I go to formal occasions.

I have lost this Backpacker twice but it always comes back to me. I lost it the first time when we went to the beach on a Friday 2 years ago. We were drinking beer so I just left it on the table for everybody to use. When we were about to go home I was looking for my Backpacker and later on everybody helped me look for it, but it was nowhere to be found. It was very difficult for me to accept the fact that I lost it. The following Monday, one of my buddies called up. He found my Backpacker inside the beer case with empty bottles at the back of his truck.

The second time I lost it, I had no idea where to look for it. I was thinking that there was a bigger chance that I just misplaced it than dropping it from my pocket somewhere else. Almost every morning for the next 2 weeks I spent several minutes looking for it everywhere in the house. Two weeks later, when I arrived home one evening I saw it on top of our bedside table. I can’t explain how happy I was. Our house maid found it under our bed when she was cleaning our room.

Using it everyday for the last 22 years has developed into an irrational love.

We live happily ever after!!!

Eddie

Vic Tinker all the way!  Tinker is nearly the perfect SAK for me, certainly the best SAK Vic ever created!

Everything I really need but nothing I don't need, and still small enough for comfortable pocketability.

There's always been a Tinker in pocket for the last 25+ years, excepting a few short periods after my frontline Tinker was lost or stolen.

I've gone through probably 5 Tinkers in 25 years, which averages out to a new Tinker about every 5 years.  Not too shabby, given all of the service I've had out of my Tinkers - since that works out to something less than $4 per year!

Although I love my Farmer...

... the Soldier is my true object of passion. The slimmer profile, the fact that I hardly ever use the saw, and the pureness of form of not having a keyring makes it perfect.

After the Soldier and the Farmer, not even the OHT gets my desire going.

Well I hinted to my wife that I'd love a G-10 handled Hiker. We'll see if she gets it for me or if I have to buy it for myself. Of course the British Army 2 piece locking clasp knife is still calling my name.

http://cgi.ebay.com/British-Army-Clasp-or-Pocket-Locking-Knife-2000-NEW_W0QQitemZ110225429540QQihZ001QQcategoryZ1403QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m122

I don't know why, it's not exactly loaded with features and I doubt it's a precisely built as a SAK but it just oozes toughness and dependability.

I do not have as extensive a collection as I wouldlike (but i'm working on it ) but the object of my affection is my vic climber it has all I need for routine stuff and work too,but best of all I can take it out anywhere and most of the sheeple don't bat an eye
Like me it's simple straight forward and effective

I agree with the simple part :P :D

Seriously though, the climber is a great urban model, and like you say, few people bat an eyelid to it :)
